Title: Painting Log- Late, but (Hopefully) Plentiful...
Post by: TuffSkull on December 30, 2011, 02:20:32 am
Hi all,

I've been whittering on about looking forward to the Festive season, as it's alway been a time when I put commissions, and Paint-for-sale projects aside and paint for my self for once.

As it happens, I've been enjoying the Festive season rather a lot without the use of brushes whatsoever and I'm only just getting down to some painting!

Anyway - I'll try to keep myself on track and post some progress as I go.

Day one, models prepped, assembled, undercoated, and basecoated in scorched brown (as I always do, for almost any colour scheme!).

These wont ALL get done, but on the bench:
Fubarnii:
12 Militia
6 herders
4 Enuk Knights
3 Knights of Relan
1 Commander brennar
1 Engineer Beru
1 Trader Caravan (trader & 2 Baruk)
3 Fubarnii Youngsters
1 Belan

Devanu:
1 Kopa
3 Grishak

Yes, the Devanu are just a little outnumbered.... I'll get to them once most of this is painted.. honest.....

I had said that I was going to try out some different schemes and more muted tones when I added to my little force, but I've grown to really like the Yoshi's and their weirdly bright riders, so I'm probably going to ignore the background (Sorry!) and go for uniformality with everything in similar colours.

I really enjoyed seeing everyone's work for the competition and further forum posts, which I'm definitely going to go back to for reference on my trader caravan. Might have to knick some ideas for markings & / or decorative warpaint on those.

There is one model I'm unlikely to touch though. Its somewhat unlike me, but I'm just so Daunted by the Belan. It was One of the first purchased, but the official scheme is soo good and so different from what I was thinking, I cant fix my mind on it at all!

I'm still painting 6mm sci-fi, Infinity and 28mm Romans at the same time, So, lets see what I can do - First pictures tomorrow morning!

I'll leave with a reminder of my force as its stood since May, as a starting point....

Really looking forward to seeing your army grow! Well done on getting so much done in a day. If only I wasn't writting up my thesis I'd be painting too! (7 more days to go.... Arggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!)

Watching with anticipation...

Those colours are also spot on - not at all out of character  :)

Well, progress is being made. I have to pop out in a bit, and the way festive "popping out" seems to be going, I may be gone quite some time, so a photo whilst I can!

I should also point out that some of the previously mentioned models were prepped & undercoated previously, that was just a list of the total awaiting paint at the end of the day - slightly mislead you there I'm afraid!

Anyway, skin & red basecoated. Its a start...

edit: the 3 painted ones are references from those completed in may, not from this batch! And in the background you can see what keeps me painting - I run Babylon 5 DVDs in the background as enough to keep me interested, without ever having to actually look at the screen!  ;D

Hard to make it out on the photo, but looks like you've gone for a mix of spear types on the militia? What do you think of the new spears?

Title: Re: Christmas Painting Log- Late, but (Hopefully) Plentiful...
Post by: TuffSkull on December 30, 2011, 06:25:35 pm
Of New Spears...

I've used all new ones on all new figures. The second captain I've had for ages with an old spear. I hadn't even noticed until you mentioned it however - I do have one spare, I might have to switch it!

They're a great improvement. If I'm being really picky, The only minor issue is that there's no defined butt end. I rather liked the detail on the old ones where they clearly had a metal capping over the butt of the spear, but these simply flare out. That is purely and aethstetic choice however, and they still look great.

I prefer the fact the heads are no longer tied to the shaft.

They're easier to fit to the figure as a little pressure to gain contact doesn't bend the spear, and I have no doubt that they'll last longer without need for repair.

Overall - All Good!

Of Further update -
toes painted, Blacks (spear shafts & main pouches) painted, Enuks first coat, Skins all inked & first 6 militia have had their skin and reds highlighted to completion.

Now, Festivities continue rather than painting which probably means no more updates until midday tomorrow... I got so much more painting done when I had no social life...  :-\

You have been busy! Looks good so far. Out of interest how many washes/ layers/ highlights do use on your skin?

You have been busy! Looks good so far. Out of interest how many washes/ layers/ highlights do use on your skin?

Once undercoated and basecoated in scorched brown, They're based in Vermin Brown (done in 2 layers to get a good coverage), then washed with WN Peat brown ink, then vermin brown & 2 different layers of pre-mixed highlights adding bleached bone to the Vermin Brown. Crikey. I hadn't registered I was doing 6 stages on the blighters. I normally reckon on 5 layers even for competition - Its really not worth it! Ho hum.... I've started so I'll finish...

Progress today? None!
I decided to get up and stat painting when my GF went to work this morning, rather than have the planned lie-in. It was going well - I even got dressed! - until I turned my PC on and just spent an hour ranting about miniature photography and arguing the benefits of lighting over camera quality.... Whoops!

Back to the Brushes... she'll be home again at 12...  ::)

Only minor advances today. Second unit of Militia have had their skin done, and the red's had its first highlight for both the Militia and the Knights. New Years Eve Party starts in an hour (yes, very dangerously early!!) so thats it until 2012 - Happy New Year Everyone!!  ;D

Happy new year!
Ta for the spear feedback. I might have to do a fancier spear at some point with a neater end, but that's what they will be like for the moment...
Looking forward to seeing how the army grows in the new year. We will finally get that tournament organised!

Title: Re: Painting Log- Late, but (Hopefully) Plentiful...
Post by: TuffSkull on January 02, 2012, 01:20:16 pm
looking forward to the tournament, whenever it may occur!

Painting is progressing, but oh so much slower than I had anticipated. I've been used to knocking out 28mm Romans at a rate of 20+ a day, but had forgotten what it was like to paint models when I actually cared about the results!

Reds highlighted for the second unit of militia, eyes added for all Militia, straps painted and a few other minor bits but it's slow going. Add to that the fact that I just deleted the update photo by mistake, and I think this log might be around for a whileyet to come, so the Festive portion of the title has been removed - Long live the painting Log!

Right. I watched the entire series of B5 Crusade today - the Marathon is nearly over on that front at least!

Whilst trying not to watch the pretty poor half-series spin-off, I painted some 6mm Kraytonians, Made a load of bases for more 6mmm Kraytonians and, the only bit you care about, Painted most of the rest of the Militia and Knight bits that needed doing - WooHoo!

So I've still got some basing work to go, not to mention all the Civilian elements to the force, but it feels like a milestone to me at least  ;D

WIP Pictures taken, they'll follow after editing tomorrow....

P.S. as an aside, I've noticed twice now that if you try to post a picture that's too large, then go back to correct it, you can no longer post. I've had to re-enter the thread and start again each time.... ?

I updated my Blog with a "What's on the workbench" post at the same time as posting the pic here, so, via a link, your wish is granted....

http://hobbybrush.blogspot.com/

There's links off that all around my website, and i'll soon be posting my annual tour of the cabinets to see what's changed, and what I plan / need to work on in 2012!

Title: Re: Painting Log- Late, but (Hopefully) Plentiful...
Post by: TuffSkull on January 04, 2012, 11:47:27 am
As it happens, I'm far more used to painting smaller scales than 28mm, so its these I find unnerving!  :-\

There's still more to add, namely shields to the knights and bush tufts to all the new bases, but the Fubarnii jumped onto a shelf for my annual tour of the cabinets (see my blog) so you get another update here too!

One question. whilst it wasn't initially an intentional move, I have now embraced the bright style of these models. My first militia & Knight unit were painted with white trim.
The second of each I've painted with yellow trim
The third unit of militia I've bottled out and left their trim black. Its a good contrast, but should I go all-out and add colour? Which? A Part of me wants to play at being a 1990's 'Eavy Metal painter and give them blue trim to complete the Primary colours line-up....  ::)

Detail shots once the shields are done!

Looking good! I don't think a bit of blue trim would look out of place - neat way to distinguish units.

Did I never give you the new knight spears? Oops... Yell if you would like them...

Title: Re: Painting Log- Late, but (Hopefully) Plentiful...
Post by: TuffSkull on January 05, 2012, 08:47:09 pm
Cheers guys!

Nope, never got any knight's spears. I'm hoping I might earn a few twighlight points so maybe I'll put those towards an armament upgrade ;)

Right, all is done and dusted for the moment. You'll notice there's no bushed onthese bases, simply because I've run out. I dont rememebr the last time that happened, it's been years as I buy them in bulk, but I leant out what's turned out to be my last bag, so no bushes for a while!

Shields have finally also been added to my original unit of knights who've always been lacking them - I found them during a clearout a while back.

More pics on my website soon, but here's one the new militia and one of the new knights

getting on for 3 months later.... wow....

I've failed completely to paint much of anything since January this year and not a spot of twilight since my last post :(

However, Salute is coming up fast, I've abandoned house hunting for a while, and it'd be a shame to have a lot of unpainted metal BEFORE the show.... I have work to do...  ;D

indeed. January is always a dead month for me as I have to do my tax return, and thus am out of the house every moment I can possibly justify to avoid that, but this year that theory seems to have lasted 3 months!

6 herders have taken faaaar too long, but are now completed bar the basing which I'll do when I've hopefully completed a few more pieces before Salute.

Next up is an engineer since my original was stolen a year ago for my competition entry  ;D  (which, now I think of it, I STILL haven't finished either....  :-[ )

Error after error trying to post these, but here's the WIP pictures from the week so far. Not taken using my usual rig, so apologies for the poor pics. I'll be painting on & off amongst my usual weekend fair, so more pics by the end of tomorrow I hope!

The little Jenta. Thought about copying the studio piece with some funky patterning, but went with a peasant kid instead - easier, quicker, and wont look out of place next to the poor level terrain I'll build if & when I get around to doing some!

Bases are still not finished, so I've not put them in front of the camera properly yet I'm afraid, but I'll get pics soon after, if not before the show of everything I get done.

Geckilian - You're on!

I ended up learning Dystopian wars at the club last night as much as doing anything productive, but Thanks to being washed off the scaffold this morning, I've got some more work done.

All the bases are now finished, the Engineer has had his eye lens painted which I'd forgotten about previously and the Knights of Relan are almost there as well. Pictures later this evening- We're rolling the dice again and going to tempt fate back up the scaff trying to repair a victorian chimney.... Yeah, I know, We're going to get soaked....

And Last but not least for the moment - Captain Danomar's Knights of Relan:

I'm really not sure about the colour of the Enuk Nobilis, but I doubt I'll change them now. I just kept thinking of Gold Chocobos....
I tried adding a few extra markings to one, but I'm equally not sure it adds anything so it'll probably remain on just the one.

Thanks all - much appreciated  ;D

Rather embarrassingly, I did the building of these models ages ago, they sat for a long time waiting for paint. I cant even remember what I did for the Bolas guy. If asked, I'd have said it was an arm provided on the weapons sprue but clearly not as Mike's asking! umm, I doubt there was any putty involved just careful trimming - I'm terribly lazy wherever possible! :-[

I'll check my workbench photos and see if I can spot anything in the background to jog my memory and be more useful!

The arm was from the light cavalry upgrade sprue. Mark is planning to make some adjustments to the original models to make them easier to swap arms, but its nice to see that the work already. We could do with another right hand though...

I agree with that. Another right hand would be most useful. Using the rope was a bit of a cop out on my part. In fact it highlights my lazyness as I hardly even bent the fingers in!

Shying away from Lazyness for a moment however, Commander Brenar is also completed and ready for action!

The red is actually really simple. Its just 3 stages. GW scab red, then 50/50 with blood red, then pure blood red. Of course, now that they've changed all their paints, I have no idea what the equivalents will be, I'm just hoping I can get enough done before I run out!  ???

They're all packed up and ready for tomorrow, all I need now is to miraculously remember all the rules!  ::)

If you look on the GW site they have a conversion chart up. Also if you google you can find a conversion chart for Vallehjo paints and the now old citadel line.
