Title: Forum suggestions
Post by: Brandlin on May 06, 2010, 12:21:02 pm
As your forum is so new that the welcome mat doesn't have hoof prints on it yet, I thought I'd drop a couple of improvement comments!

I love the feel of the site, the branding and theme of the rule book is consistently applied here... However its always difficult to get computer type and colouring to look right on parchment backgrounds.

It's hard to spot a link in this theme. (Take a look at my sig) You can't easily see that "Brandlin's Blog" is a link unles you mouse over it. Can you make links a new colour.

A lot of the information on the pages merges together. Some form of boundary or delimiter between forum areas and topics and individual threads would help structure the pages better. at the moment its hard to see where one topic/thread stops and the next starts. bolder/bigger text for thread titles wuld help here too i think.

Congrats on getting this up and running though - I hope you get lots of discussion and comment. I'll certainly be around!! :D

Hi , just to quickly expand on the "merging" effect. Its very difficult to see where one post ends and another starts.

Example here is Brandlins sig merges into the next post.
http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?topic=3.0 (http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?topic=3.0)

EDIT
same for this one lol.......and forgot to say I like the colours and style.

I like it, it's nice and open. Don't listen to all these fuddy duddies :D

But please add in something so that when you post a message it directs you to the thread you just posted in and not back to the forum the thread is in

I'm a fan of the skin.

Hyperlinks could be underlined rather than another colour, and that can be by posters (http://google.com).

The forum clock is wrong too.....I had to offset time by 8 hours in my profile  :P

I'm currently looking at this on my blackberry, so not getting the full benefit of the fancy skin! I do like it though, and I think I should do a few random extra bits. Anybody know how to create smilies?

By the way, there is no link to here from your WoT website (tut tut)

That's a good point - you really should make sure the WAP version is useable.

yup, dat's true. Works on my blackberry and jules' iPhone. I haven't got any other phones to test it on!

I'm using a Samsung Omni running a windows OS, with Opera Browser.  This is getting all the fancy layout - which makes it slow, and the dark backround is shown in full, followed by the lighter parchment pictures... meaning i have to scroll several screens down past the very dark brown background to get to any content. Might be easier to disable to background images for the WAP version?

Although this is hardly a priority issue.

I think I've managed to sort that, although apparently it shows the server time, not the user's time. And the server's in England.

Thanks! I might look into putting a gentle dividing line, just to help discern different posts, but I mainly wanted to get rid of the default boxy look!

I ... I have no idea how to do that. I'll see if I can do it in the PHP code, but if it's written into the sourcecode, I'm afraid I'm not going to recompile my own version!

Well spotted :)  Hopefully the "Twilight" logo in the top left should now link you back there. I might also see about adding a new button to the sections bar, next to "Home", if people think it won't otherwise be found?

Progress will be slow, because I don't have any kind of phone to test it through! However, I've had a random hack at some CSS labelled "wireless", to hopefully remove the background. Let me know if it's made any difference!

The problem is there is are dividing lines that the software already puts in but they are between the header and the top of the post body, and between the post body and the footer (signature) text. so it looks divided in the wrong places now.  A 'gentle line would be good and not ruin your look.

Mind you the quote boxes are very grey and boxy aren't they  ;) :P

This is configurable for each user!  profile look and feel has a check box for "return to topic after I post"

Its not a priority - no discernable difference here. On opera mobile it doesn't seem to lay the lighter back ground over the dark one, it runs them consecutively down the page so scroll down miles just to get to the logo, then scroll down more to get to the body of the page.

Title: WAP/phone access
Post by: Gethuch on May 09, 2010, 11:28:34 pm

I can't replicate the problem, because the closest I can get to your system is the Opera Mobile 10 emulator, and that renders perfectly well. You could try updating your browser, or, failing that, try

http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?wap2 (http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?wap2)
or
http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?imode (http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?imode)
or
http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?iphone (http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?iphone)

The WAP2 version, in particular, will remove all the prettiness, and probably make it MUCH faster. Other phone-users might want to bookmark it too, either for speed or for reducing the bandwidth charges!

The gentle dividing line proved slightly difficult. What do you think of my shaded-box solution?
If it's not popular, I might end up hacking the PHP to put an extra little "box" between the posts, so I can have a nice pencil-drawn dividing line in there :)

I should have mentioned earlier that I like how the colour variations works on the screen! I've been stuck to viewing via my phone for the last few days so I've only just got to see it in all its improved glory  ;D

Did you know that if you click on "community" ont he website there's still a big FoD link?

Also, all the text and sketch-pics look really dark right now. Like really, really dark.

And also have you stopped putting the basic rules on the site? I can't find them anymore... (I do have a rulebook, of course, but it's good to be able to point people to them to read through without having to physically be there with my book).
EDIT: just found them... me being dumb. Sorry. OOI, why did you add Brenar and the Jenta in but leave Beru, the herders and the ranged rules out?

Title: Re: Forum suggestions

Sorry. OOI, why did you add Brenar and the Jenta in but leave Beru, the herders and the ranged rules out?
That was entirely down to space in the printed rulebook! Seen as I was updating them I shifted the points costs from the experimental bit to the main stats pages and then had a spare page. I didn't have room for all the new ranged rules, but Brenar and the Jenta fitted nicely (and gave something to both the Devanu and the Empire).
As an aside, Beru is the same engineer described in the rules, the scenario and in the little story (and these letters (http://forum-of-doom.com/index.php?topic=12616.0)). I just decided to finally give him a name and highlight the fact that he's a character rather than being a generic little engineer. This thoroughly confused Beth, Tom and Gill at salute when they ran out of Engineers and had to give out Beru instead...

Title: Re: Forum suggestions
Post by: Jubal on May 23, 2010, 01:05:16 pm
I'd worked that one out, but the "Beru" rules are different to the original due to the ranged combat rules having been introduced.

Is Beru, to your mind, a fairly "ordinary" Engineer, or is he a cut above the rest? My own contraption rules kinda rest on the principle of him being about the same "power" as an ordinary Engineer thus far (though of course they're always open to change).

Title: Re: Forum suggestions
Post by: Carcharoth on May 23, 2010, 01:24:07 pm
Beru is far from ordinary, but there are plenty of other engineers who would be of a similar level of intelligence/creativity to him. A lot of those would focus their attentions on completely different areas of research, but there would be enough engineers around so that your contraptions aren't completely out of place!

Title: Re: Forum suggestions
Post by: Brandlin on May 23, 2010, 02:17:26 pm
engineers are never ordinary - we are all special... :)

Yeah, I figured the FoD link can stay there for the moment, The Forum link is more prominent anyway.

Do you mean the text and sketches on the WoT website, or in this forum? Do they still look like that? Which browser are you using?

sounds like the dark areas aren't being displayed as transparent as they should.

yes - use photobucket.

you can just paste in the url of the picture from the web into Photobucket and then just copy and paste the photo bucket url into the forum.
