Title: Halcyon's bits and pieces
Post by: Halcyon on January 27, 2015, 06:53:07 pm
In addition to my painting competition entries http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?topic=1870.0 (http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?topic=1870.0),
I thought it might be a good idea to post some work in progress shots as well.

As the daylight today has been poor for painting (very cloudy) and I am still getting to grips with the camera I got for Xmas,
I thought I would have a play and take some picture of those Plutom's Mechanicals figures that I have actually finished.

For my previous pictures, I found that I had to resize them quite a bit on the computer, so I tried reducing the pixel resolution.
This time they were photographed under artificial light, so I used my daylight bulb as an extra light source.
I am happy to say I am quite pleased with the outcome.  :)

A couple of KalDru which are also finished, the one on the left has had his head repositioned.

Ooh! Looking good!
Those look like delgon expeditionaries, venturing down to Orel...

Wow, nice picture. Your bases clearly matching your desert terrain.
It would have made a nice photograph for the rulebook, combined with Carcharoth's text.

Also, posing your priest this way shows how good your choice of colours was.
Good job!

My "Desert Planet" wargames table, has turned out to be very versatile over the years. Although it and the terrain were originally built for playing Starship Troopers, I have found that by just changing some of the terrain it is also suitable for Doctor Who, Malifaux, Cutlass, Napoleonic Peninsular War, Gorkamorka, Judge Dredd and it can now be the Argoran Wastes for Twilight.  :)

Talking of which, NuraSen Zhal the leader of the Delgon expeditionary force, currently advancing into the Argoran Wastes.

This figure, along with the NuraLehn, were the test pieces I used to work out the colour scheme for the Priests.
I am still not 100% happy with the staff colour, or the eyes, so I will probably do something about them later on, hence it is still a WIP. However it does show of the headress quite well, so I thought I would share it.

This afternoon I managed to finish painting all my Plutoms Mechanicals, so hopefully I will be able to get some pictures, of them, into the competion section tomorrow.  :)

Edit: I forgot to list a couple of games, including the most played one... Gorkamorka.  ::)

I think the colour of his staff gives a nice contrast to the red and black.
Nice work!
It makes me want to continue painting my delgon too :).

Great stuff. I wouldn't change the eyes - they're different from others' takes on the look of the pieces and give him an interesting feel IMHO.  :)

I am glad to say that work on my Knights of Orlean starter is on schedule.

As of lunchtime today, they have all been...

a. cleaned (mold lines removed and washed in detergent)
b. sword and lance arms pinned and dry fitted (I will paint them first before attaching)
c. based (sand and grit added to base)
d. undercoated

Hopefully, I will start painting them next week.  :)

There has been a slight set back on my Militia painting schedule... as I didn't like either of my test pieces.  :(

I was quite happy with both the Enuks but not with the armour of their riders.  ::)

For my third attempt, I tried the "official" colour scheme, which although it turned out nice, looked very bland when coupled with my sand colour bases and the buff colour scheme I had chosen for my Enuks.

So, for my fourth attempt, I reversed the colours from my previous try, giving the riders pale blue armour and the Enuk grey tack.

Hooray, a colour scheme I finally liked.  :)
WIP picture to follow soon.

(However, they now do look similar to a couple of other Militia forces I have seen... ho hum... that's life.)

Grewt dedication to finding the scheme you liked - I look forward to seeing the results of your endeavours  :)

Were you painting over the old paintschemes as you went? It would have been fun to see the process  :)
Glad you've settled on a scheme now!

As I wasn't sure how I wanted them to look, I painted up two of the Knights as test pieces.

I try to paint in thin layers, gradually building up the colour, so if I don't like the colour scheme after the first layer, it is relatively easy to over paint them.

For my third attempt I chose the Knight with the Enuk I preferred and just overpainted the armour and tack. As I thought it turned out a little bland, I decided to repaint my second test piece as well. As the colours on that one were a little dark, I gave it a quick dusting of undercoat before repainting it.

Although it is still a WIP, this is the colour scheme I settled on.  :)

Looking good, I like the colours you choose.
Only the hood on the enuk is a bit too light in my opinion.
Could be because of the light though.
I love to see your full force.

I also like the light tones you've chosen, especially on the enuk. it goes well with the terrain and lends it an arid feel.

Phew !!! (big sigh of relief)... I have just posted my painting challenge entry for this month.

http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?topic=1892.0 (http://www.worldoftwilight.com/forum/index.php?topic=1892.0)

Halfway through the month, I was only a little behind schedule... but then real life just kept getting in the way.
There were times this last week when I didn't think I would get anything finished in time.  ::)

Next month will be Gohral and Obal and possibly some Devanu.  :)

I know how it feels :(.
Sadly I haven't been able to finish even one starter this month.
I'm a making a last ditch effort this weekend, but it isn't looking good.

Anyway, congratulations! You made it ;), and they look very good too.

Congratulations getting them finished!
Would it be useful to push the deadline back to Sunday night?

Thank you for the offer, but I have nothing else I could finish in time, even with an extra day.  :)

Plus, I had planned to spend the weekend, on getting a bit more done on my buildings.  8)

As I mentioned above, I have taken a couple of days off from painting, to try and make some progress on my buildings.

I have now managed to build and undercoat two roofs, clad one of my towers and made a door for it.

The roof is not yet attached, but this is what  I have achieved so far...

I used...
500g Tesco Drinking Chocolate container (3 3/4" diameter cardboard)
260gsm Hammer Ivory Card to clad the tube (it has a mottled texture)
210gsm White Card for the Roof and Timbers (double thickness for both)
8mm Plastic Disposable Tattoo Ink Caps for the Windows
Balsa wood for the door.

I tried making a roof out of single thickness card, but it ended up looking too flimsy, so I now spray-mount two pieces of card together to give it the proper thickness. Likewise the "timber" frame looks better when it is double thickness.
I am happy with the door height and width, but I think the arch needs a slightly taller Keystone adding.

I was ordering some cheap stuff on eBay from China and came across the Tattoo Ink Caps, amongst the sellers other items.
At only £1 for 100, I thought it was worth getting some to see if they would work as windows (and happily they do  :)).
The rim is 2mm wide giving a diameter of 12mm for the window, you just have to cut a 9mm diameter hole and push the cap in.

I plan to make a four storey tower out of a Pringles tube and I also have a 750g Cadbury Drinking Chocolate container.
It is the same diameter as the Tesco one and should make a nice three storey building.

I am looking forward to continuing with this project, once the painting competitions are over.  :)

A very nice start, this will look great!
These windows are genius! Don't sue me if I copy that ;).

Excellent bit of scenery building! Going to have to order some of those caps - round windows are a real pain to do neatly!
Other than that you've taken the same approach I tend to - right down to the cladding in paper etc. :)

I don't think you need much advice, but just in case you are interested...
You could try adding diagonal support struts between some of the beams.
I nearly always draw fubarnii houses with various intersecting cylinders. It's a bit tricky (particularly for the roofs), but it gives a nice haphazard feel. Clan Orel have a more disciplined approach to building though, which would fit with your desert scenery.
Has the house got a chimney?

Really good work  :)

Delightful building that fits right in and as the others have said the windows are ingenious.

Be my guest, copy away.  :)
There is also a medium size cap which has a 17mm diameter and the same 2mm rim.

round windows are a real pain to do neatly!
Yes, I know... originally I tried using washers, but the flat washers didn't like sticking to the curved cylinder !
I attempted two ways to try and bed the washers down, bending them so that were curved and filing a hollow into their backs.
Neither worked and both were a complete pain to do... needless to say the project ground to a complete halt for 3 months, before I stumbled upon the caps.  :)

You could try adding diagonal support struts between some of the beams.
...
Has the house got a chimney?
I might add some diagonal supports later on, I just wanted to get the window placement right first and yes I do plan on adding a chimney.

I nearly always draw fubarnii houses with various intersecting cylinders. It's a bit tricky (particularly for the roofs), but it gives a nice haphazard feel.
I was trying to keep it simple to start with, to make sure all the techniques worked.
However I do have some morecomplex plans that I would like to try at a later date, including a covered walkways between towers and a large circular outpost with several towers in it's wall.

As the buildings are a bit of a side project, which I only dabble with to give me a break from painting, don't expect for them to be finished anytime soon.  8)

Buildings looking superb, and a great solution to doing round windows. You might have started a "thing" with that idea.......  ;D

Work on my Devanu is on schedule.

As of this morning, they have all been...

a. cleaned (mold lines removed and washed in detergent)
b. arms and legs pinned and fitted
c. based (sand and grit added to base)
d. undercoated

I have also managed to slap some paint onto the Kosok, a Jenta and a couple of Grishak.
Plus Gohral, Obal and their Bodyguards have also been started.

Hopefully the rest of the month will be as productive (unlike last month).  :)

My Devanu are now finished and pictures have been posted in the Competion area.

Although it doesn't show up well in the pictures, I copied someone elses idea (apologies I can't remember who) of the the Devanu getting darker as they got older. The Jenta are all the same colour, the Kopa another and the Sempa a mix of the two.
Likewise the scales on the Kopa and Sempa are darker than those on the Jenta.
Again, it doesn't show up well in the pictures, but they all have the same shade of paler underbelly.

I had two attempts at painting the Kosok, the first attempt was using several shades of red.
It turned out quite well, but looked far too bright and out of place in a desert setting.
Also it just didn't look right when placed next to the other Devanu figures.
I settled for a Vulture inspired paint scheme and just couldn't resist keeping the red head when I saw pictures of the Turkey Vulture.

The painting has (just about) gone to schedule this month and hopefully I will also be able to finish Gohral, Obal and their Bodyguards before the competition ends.  :)

Following on from a comment that all the clothes looked the same colour...
which although I had used three different colours...
when I looked at the pictures...
I agree that the difference in the greys really was too subtle.  :(

So I have just redone the clothes on the Sempa and kicking Jenta with two more different greys.
The group as a whole now looks so much better.   :)

Fortuneately, the group shot was the last I did and as I hadn't got around to clearing away my miniatures, I have been able to recreate a before and after shot.
(Although once again the picture doesn't really show the difference).  ::)

It already looks better and the variety in colours shows.
You can see the difference in particular on the hunter, who now has a far darker jacket.

My Delgon army is now finished.

Since January a burgandy wash has been applied to the red on the Priests, to deepen it.
This change to the colour scheme has also been carried out on this months entries.  :)

Originally the red looked a little too orange, the new shade is much better, especially on NuraSen Plutom.  8)
