Title: Scenery Competition 2015 by Caliginosity
Post by: Caliginosity on August 03, 2015, 06:57:00 pm
Hi All,

This is an experiment into an idea that I am trying to build into a part of my entry into the Scenery competition 2015.

From the photo, it doesn't look like much, but there is a method to my madness.

I have a liking for the Devanu, and wanted to give them a bit more than they have currently been offered.  I want to build a network of desert tunnels and platforms that these creatures would call home.

I'm certainly intrigued to see where this goes!

I have an idea to produce rocky outcrops and caverns, a number of varying sizes that can be used in any number of combinations.

Here is a test product, please excuse the fact that Gil is not painted, I haven't got round to that yet, but I will.

I am also interested to see what you come up with.   ;)  are you using cork?  I'm not sure if I'm seeing the material correctly......

Hi,

Yeah.  I have a bundle of cork tiles from a long time ago.  My wife had these punches for her work, and I kept looking at both and decided to bring them together.

Clever idea! I guess you can then rough everything up a little once you've built the major structures.

That is the basic idea, I am building a couple of these small structures and trying different methods to see which works best.
I currently have the original one covered in a watered down filler, I will do one 'roughed up', and possibly one with just PVA and sand.

Are there any other options to help create a desert / rocky style?

I've tried styrofoam with a hot wire cutter (the pics in the book with the knights of Orel), which I think is the age old approach.

Hmm, something to consider.

But for now here are the three examples :

1) Filler (Watered down filler spread over the item)
2) Roughed (The edges of the cork have been broken)
3) Sand (Differing levels of sand, from fine through to rocky glued onto item.

Please let me know which looks best at this moment, or to offer any other tips and hints.

Managed to get the paint to dry, here are some painted examples that may help with the decision.

I am not 100% with the colour mix, I think that the base colour is a little dark.  Maybe I need to give it some time....

What a great idea! Somehow they have a bit of a South American/Mexican look.
These will look great on the table.
I was thinking you could add some tall grass or small bushes on the base.

I think the first two work the best.

Cool idea by the way :D

those do look great. they work both as scenery and terrain and can be easily used in many other games. nice job!   :)

Thank you one and all.

Kryptovidicus, the Mexican idea was what I was trying to go for.  The stone pillars formed by eons of erosion.

Lost Egg, Yeah the top two are my faves as well.  Maybe incorporate some sand on the base as well, just not completely covered!

GrimSnik, Again was part of the idea, to create scenery and terrain that can be used together in numerous ways.

 :D

Good idea to include the sand, it would help them feel a bit like they are emerging from the ground, half hidden :)

Cheers,  I have produced another bunch of 'structures', and am awaiting them to dry.  As soon as that this done, I will begin the filler and then the painting.  Will post more pics when i have a little more to show.  :D

Well, my little collection is dry, and I have covered with the filler.  I have added sand and a few small stones sparingly, to add a more textured look.

Next stage is to paint, and I think I will do the base coat a tad lighter this time around.

Sorry I've been a bit slow to respond, but they are looking good so far. Looking forward to seeing how this batch looks!

Well, got them painted up.  I have gone for a sand base with a blue / grey rock with a dusty desert look.

I will soon have a nice little collection of rocks and natural structures for Gil to go searching for the various creatures that would inhabit such an area :), or an area that may be to dangerous to enter due to the risk of Devanu attack from the many hiding places. :'(

Pics soon! I apologize in advance, I do not have any of the miniatures painted up to go into the display, but Gil may make an appearance.

Well the photos of the finished rocky scenery has now been placed into the competition folder.

But what is this?  It looks like the foundations of some building from a time in the past, nothing more than a shell of its former glory.

The ruins are a good idea, probably I shall try something similar next time :)
