An untold story, known by all.
Heya!

Hi, I have just (as in yesterday) got into Twilight. The storyline, the vampires, it's so beautiful! *sniffs*
Well maybe not that. This game is amazing. I did see something of this before, via Hasslefree, but didn't know what it was, and promptly forgot about it. It wasn't until I saw the figures going past the stall at Salute, did I remember, but the group I was with are very dedicated to Warmachine, Malifaux and picking up bits for their RPG sessions, so I never had chance to look into it. They left to get a drink, with me on a mission to buy a few paints, and instead got drawn back to the stall. I was after some "cute figures for my partner" (she is against most of the figures I have/want, with only Malifaux's piglets drawing any emotion other than "ew"), and then after discussing the game, got to play the sample scenario.
I was taken back! The game was as fun to play as it looked! Although my actual play experience is very limited (no friends local when I was a kid etc), I have solo-played many games, from the heady days of Heroquest, to Malifaux, Bushido and Warmachine of current. None of those games managed to capture the absolute fun of Twilight! The skills were pretty easy to understand, and even then, they had letters to explain what they did. The combat actually felt like it was flowing, rather than the usual "hit/wound/save" that you normally get (i'm looking at you Bucket-o-dice-Hammer 40k!), and the ability to use skills, then react to them, meant that a simple "hey I got four hits and you have two defence" turned into a dynamic combat experience, where re-rolls were forced and used, before the Devanu managed to escape everything with it's final ability. At no point was it "oh I didn't get a 4+", you actually felt that while luck was involved, you have a good amount of control.
With any game I've played, the rules can be amazing, but without fluff to back it up, it's just spreadsheeting averages. Twilight, from what I've read/been told so far, has more fluff than a baby bunny. There's a colourful world, with factions that feel not only unique, but... alive. There is no grim-dark, no overbearing evil, or insufferable good. Any side of a conflict can morally justify their actions, without the need for words like "because we're evil!". There is no "chaos-men-in-powered-armour", or "evil sadistic versions of good elves" here. What makes it perfect, is that the figures are not just war gaming items. There's civilians, pack animals, things that might be nothing more than an objective, yet breathes life into the background, and every gaming table. Villagers can look on as battles take place while maybe even random animals from the wilds might use the confusion of conflict to pick off stragglers or wounded!
Ok I've gushed enough. The game is fun, the figures and background are beautiful, and my girlfriend didn't pull a face when I said "have a look at these". All in all, a victory. Now I just got to find players... anyone in Birmingham/Wolverhampton?
Bio:
I'm Chris, an ex-student (computing), with a dog, a partner I don't live with yet, and an attic full of lead figures from god-knows how many systems I never play/have ever played. One day I hope to get round to them, or at least grow a split personality who also enjoys gaming!

Thanks! While I like the feel of the Fubarnii, I think the Devanu need my love and attention. It's close though, I love all the figures, and the backgrounds are amazing. It's just... I see them as a non-evil force, one that is being slowly wiped out due to progress. Kinda like how homo-sapien evolved and survived, while the (possibly) more dominant Neanderthals died out. I'm hoping, that eventually something will happen to bring the Devanu into something like an established group that can eventually form alliances, or at the least, wary respect with the Fubarnii. I have this kind-of imagine of some form of messiah/prophet that brings some forms of modern thinking to the Devanu, which starts to give them more than just a predator's edge in battle.

Not too much though, as if you're watching him you can't see the horde of Grishak bearing down on you from behind.

Welcome Chris. Cracking first post there and I like how you describe the characters that you wouldnt normaly see in wargames. I enjoy sculpting the civillians and villagers etc and feel it adds a whole more depth to the game world. Kind of makes it more real.
Saying that I have 2 pretty heavily armed Fubarnii noble guards nearing completion which Im sure Mike will be pleased to hear :-)
Oh and maybe you need to read a bit further back into the Devanu/Fubarnii history before you decide if you really do feel so sorry for them.

Welcome indeed, pretty much my reaction to Twilight also. Just love the world and expanding themes within.
That and my partner much prefers Twilight models over most others that I paint
