Title: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement: finished ! Post by: Letchaï on June 20, 2015, 11:08:42 pm Good evening everyone !
So I'd like to participate to the scenery contest (it'll be hard with 3 complete weeks of farniente in Italy :D ) with an ambitious project. Here is the concept sketch: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/901340IMGP2836retouche.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=901340IMGP2836retouche.jpg) On the left a "classic" settlement, inspired by the different sketches in the book or in these forums. Time to grab the different elements ! On the right: it's a sort of escaping exit, in the case that the tower is invaded by blood thirsty Devanu. So it'll be a sort of pile of rocks, with a wooden door inserted in. Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: The Slann on June 20, 2015, 11:34:43 pm I like that idea, and I know your skills, so I'm really looking forward to this project :D
So, officially, welcome to the challenge ;) cheers, Slann Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on June 21, 2015, 08:18:38 am Superb :)
Don't feel too constrained by the Brandlin style buildings - the fubarnii are always breaking architectural rules ;) I would maybe increase the size of the top floor of the tower a tiny bit to break up the straight verticals and maybe play with different cladding on some parts of the building. I would also increase the overhang on the eaves. Or just build it exactly as you've drawn it and ignore me :) Nice idea on the bolt hole. Very excited to see how this develops! Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on June 21, 2015, 09:45:01 am Thanks !
Superb :) Well, i got more inspired by the sketches in the book and the little demo table at Salute ;)Don't feel too constrained by the Brandlin style buildings - the fubarnii are always breaking architectural rules ;) I would maybe increase the size of the top floor of the tower a tiny bit to break up the straight verticals and maybe play with different cladding on some parts of the building. I would also increase the overhang on the eaves. I made the same reflections after posting my sketch ! With these modifications the scenery would look better.Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Kryptovidicus on June 21, 2015, 02:55:10 pm Ambitious, but as I have seen your knight diorama I think this will end up looking amazing.
I can see where your inspiration comes from though. A smaller but similar build was on the KS page if I'm not mistaken. Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on June 21, 2015, 07:41:11 pm A smaller but similar build was on the KS page if I'm not mistaken. That is correct! The design is similar to the building I had at Salute, which also had a small blimp tethered to the top :)Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Crucium Giger on June 22, 2015, 10:28:13 am Well even as a sketch this is looking rather wonderful.
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on June 23, 2015, 09:16:18 pm Hope I will not disappoint you !
Well, da best moment in making Twilight sceneries ;D (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/29196120150623174723.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=29196120150623174723.jpg) :D Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: The Slann on June 23, 2015, 09:59:34 pm hahaha, I know that feeling ;)
But the scale didn't like it :P Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Kryptovidicus on June 24, 2015, 08:30:03 am Lol :D
I don't know what the can for your middle part is filled with, but I hope it is just as tasty. Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on June 24, 2015, 10:34:31 am That's an excellent start ;D
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on June 25, 2015, 12:23:58 pm Lol :D I'm yet prospecting. I have thought to big vegetables cans or prepared recipes cans, like cassoulet or coq au vin ;DI don't know what the can for your middle part is filled with, but I hope it is just as tasty. The size is ok, but I'm not sure we'll want to eat cassoulet until the end of the summer ! So I think that I'll scratch it with cardboard. Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on June 25, 2015, 03:15:29 pm In the UK I think you get some good sized chocolate boxes, so that's something you could investigate if your diet needs more damage...
For my first buildings I ended up chopping up drainpipe. That's a lot of effort though, so you might be better scratchbuilding it! Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on June 26, 2015, 08:44:26 pm Eaten all the pringles, serious things begin !
I'll try to do a maximum of photos of the building process. First step: cut two rounds in 2mm thick cardboard: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/59250420150626155236.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=59250420150626155236.jpg) And a notch to put the Pryn Gul tower ^^ (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/69142020150626160340.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=69142020150626160340.jpg) After cutting, I test if it adjust correctly: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/39176620150626160355.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=39176620150626160355.jpg) And I glue thicknesses of polystyrene to strengthen the structure: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/36829220150626161219.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=36829220150626161219.jpg) Then I glue the wall (including a parapet), made of the same cardboard: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/15363120150626172752.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=15363120150626172752.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/64054220150626172805.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=64054220150626172805.jpg) Let's see what happens then: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/40239820150626182000.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=40239820150626182000.jpg) I plan to glue sandpaper on the walls to simulate a roughcast wall. What do you think ? That's all for today :) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on June 26, 2015, 10:14:36 pm Excellent start! I'm loving all the intersecting circles.
Only concern with sandpaper would be for your minis... I tend to clad in rough paper, or paint with a mix of paint and fine sand. How are you doing windows? I've got a bunch of tattoo ink cups that halcyon suggested. Happy to send some your way if they'd be handy (or have a look on eBay). Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: GrimSnik on June 27, 2015, 03:17:45 am nice step-by-step layout. :) how long did you leave the rubber bands on the cardboard wrap-around? I've seen folks use rubber bands before like this but I have not tried it myself.
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Kryptovidicus on June 27, 2015, 08:40:34 am This is a great start! You can already see how it will progress from the basic structure you posted.
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on June 27, 2015, 06:40:07 pm Cool idea and a good start. :D
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on August 09, 2015, 06:05:00 pm Hi all ! And sorry for the long delay without news. nice step-by-step layout. :) how long did you leave the rubber bands on the cardboard wrap-around? I've seen folks use rubber bands before like this but I have not tried it myself. I let them 24 hours, but normally the glue is entirely dried after 4.The scenery progress slowly, but surely. Cutting the shingles is such a bore ! :-\ Here is a pic showing where iam with it, and two close ups of the position testings for some accessories :) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/190076IMGP3808.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=190076IMGP3808.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/938253IMGP3809.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=938253IMGP3809.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/646797IMGP3810.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=646797IMGP3810.jpg) See you for the next update ! Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on August 10, 2015, 07:48:40 am Good work on the shingles! I know how mind numbing they can be...
Drop me a pm and I'll sort you some fubarnii accessories if you would like (although I think you might already have some plates etc from the kickstarter?). Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Kryptovidicus on August 11, 2015, 07:34:26 pm Amazing work on the shingles, they may be a bore but the extra effort also makes the building look more realistic.
I also like the setup with the goods, a bit like the meeting place of two traders. Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on August 12, 2015, 07:31:07 pm Thanks guys !
I used Brandlin's templates, available on his site. Paste on cardboard and then cut. Effective, but long ! The next: Doors ! (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/203659IMGP3819.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=203659IMGP3819.jpg) Paste in place (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/619162IMGP3824.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=619162IMGP3824.jpg) With the protection above (how do you call that ? In french it's "marquise") (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/220136IMGP3825.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=220136IMGP3825.jpg) The tower in current state: looks not like a pringles box anymore, but still many work to do ! (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/842042IMGP3829.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=842042IMGP3829.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/568583IMGP3830.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=568583IMGP3830.jpg) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on August 13, 2015, 06:57:20 am Lovely work. The doors are nicely done.
I'm glad you stuck with the shingles they look great :D Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: GrimSnik on August 13, 2015, 01:05:09 pm coming along nicely. :)
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on August 15, 2015, 09:26:04 pm I still have a (half) roof to do, but i'm on the good way ! :)
But here is what i've done today: Texturing the adjacent building: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/415814IMGP3838.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=415814IMGP3838.jpg) Cutting windows borders: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/406547IMGP3840.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=406547IMGP3840.jpg) Carving the paving stones on the terrace: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/865931IMGP3842.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=865931IMGP3842.jpg) After that i press randomly a little rock to texture the depron on surface. And the result of the work of the day: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/763940IMGP3845.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=763940IMGP3845.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/867414IMGP3844.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=867414IMGP3844.jpg) It begins to look like what i had in mind at the beginning of the project :) Sadly the progress is not as fast as i would, so i'm pretty sure it'll be not painted for the 24th august. Probably finished to built, but not painted :/ Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on August 15, 2015, 10:16:52 pm I bet this is gunna be awesome when painted up.
Never mind if its not finished by the comp, its far better you take your time :) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: GrimSnik on August 16, 2015, 03:36:35 pm even if you don't finish for the competition, the tutorial you've provided is still a first rate effort. I enjoy seeing the different ways you construct parts for the tower. ;)
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: The Slann on August 16, 2015, 03:50:58 pm I like the way you make the windows and stone floor. I might steal the Idea for Gar Loren...
keepup the lovely detailed work, and don't forget, worst part is done ;) damn shingles. .. Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on August 16, 2015, 10:39:03 pm It's fun watching this one take shape! The sandpaper cladding still scares me, but it looks like it is going to be great once it's finished (even if it is a little late...).
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Kadmon on August 21, 2015, 11:34:55 pm Very cool and very "twilighty" :) I love it
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on August 23, 2015, 05:49:34 pm Thanks guys for all your comments !
So, last day for the landscapes competition ! Mine is sadly not finished, but here is an update: The construction is finished and undercoated: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/252684IMGP3911.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=252684IMGP3911.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/197940IMGP3912.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=197940IMGP3912.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/678627IMGP3913.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=678627IMGP3913.jpg) (Here i have to add stairs) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/437099IMGP3914.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=437099IMGP3914.jpg) Some stuff is still already painted though: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/440190IMGP3915.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=440190IMGP3915.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/800139IMGP3916.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=800139IMGP3916.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/714056IMGP3919.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=714056IMGP3919.jpg) Mike, were you traumatized by Timon and Pumbaa ? ;D (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rYh0nP3Fk6I/TKmBOaYh-XI/AAAAAAAAAA8/zOM9ccSRn0w/s1600/072_-timone_offers_bugs_ala_carte.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/174682IMGP3917.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=174682IMGP3917.jpg) And i have all these accessories sent by Mike (thanks to you again !) to add: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/734725IMGP3921.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=734725IMGP3921.jpg) What i still have to do: paint the building, of course add a flag on the mast on the top do the base: sand, flocks, grass, etc finish to paint and glue the accessories Build wooden stairs to put on the rear of the largest building. Stay tuned ! Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on August 23, 2015, 07:04:08 pm Nice! I'm really looking forward to seeing this finished :)
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on August 23, 2015, 11:50:59 pm It's an absolute beauty! Can't wait to see it finished.
As for timon and puumba? Traumatised or inspired by? (Although I would have to ask mark - he takes credit for the plates of good!) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Kryptovidicus on August 24, 2015, 07:19:07 pm Wow, I just started peeking at the details, ... wow
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on August 24, 2015, 09:56:58 pm Thanks for your enthusiasm ^^
It makes me keep the motivation on top ! I've begun the painting of the walls and roofs :) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Kadmon on August 25, 2015, 03:20:14 pm Wow! The paintjob on the finished pieces is awesome!
(I have a deja vu of sending this post the second time but I couldn't find the previous one - if it appears somehow, sorry for the double post) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Taelan on August 25, 2015, 11:54:13 pm Wow, very impressive and with the images you see how straightforward construction can net great results. I also second Mike's support with bits for modellers - really thankful for his gifts to my collection.
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on September 02, 2015, 05:00:22 pm Wow! The paintjob on the finished pieces is awesome! I've posted the same images in the scenery comp thread, that's why you have a felling of déjà vu ;)(I have a deja vu of sending this post the second time but I couldn't find the previous one - if it appears somehow, sorry for the double post) Well, here comes the weekly update ! I sadly begin to get bored with this project, it takes me more time than expected at the beginning. In that state, the scenery is playable, but i still have many things to do ! So i have to hang on ! (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/595142IMGP3955b.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=595142IMGP3955b.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/141334IMGP3948.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=141334IMGP3948.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/420785IMGP3954.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=420785IMGP3954.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/660613IMGP3960.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=660613IMGP3960.jpg) Many more pics here (with minis especially): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.490202724480372.1073741850.120518124782169&type=3 And to compare with the concept sketch. Quite close, so i'm satisfied of the result :) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/202785comparatif.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=202785comparatif.jpg) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: The Slann on September 02, 2015, 05:04:36 pm As I already said on fb, really cool work!
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on September 02, 2015, 06:18:24 pm Looks great, I love the little details like the posters :D
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Carcharoth on September 02, 2015, 07:27:30 pm Quite simply the most wonderfully crafted twilight terrain I've seen.
Well done persevering, it really is worth it and I want to see it finished! Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Crucium Giger on September 02, 2015, 10:18:09 pm Looks gorgeous, fantastically put together piece,
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: GrimSnik on September 03, 2015, 01:23:16 am very nice tower. I showed it to the people at the game store today and they were also impressed! :D that's some inspiring work.
did you just apply paint directly over the sandpaper walls, or did you treat them in any way first? Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Kadmon on September 04, 2015, 11:24:37 pm This is great in every meaning of the word :)
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on September 09, 2015, 08:35:34 pm did you just apply paint directly over the sandpaper walls, or did you treat them in any way first? No particular treatment, just a black base coating, and then classic brush painting + washes.Well, I'm persevering, the end is near ! So let's go for some more WIPs ! I've glued few pieces of maritime pine bark, normally used in flower beds in the garden. Then I've textured around them with a product called here "rebouch'bois", which has a perfect granularity: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/453861IMGP3962.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=453861IMGP3962.jpg) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/768009IMGP3965.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=768009IMGP3965.jpg) After that I continue the texturing work on the base: (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/115270IMGP3966.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=115270IMGP3966.jpg) And the first layer of paint (poor photos !) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/444128IMGP3970.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=444128IMGP3970.jpg) What is this little hole ? ;) (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/413014IMGP3971.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=413014IMGP3971.jpg) And the beginning of the little tree ! (http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/524437IMGP3972.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=524437IMGP3972.jpg) Bye ! Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on September 09, 2015, 08:39:50 pm Lovely attention to detail, keep up the good work! :D
Hmm...I suspect some kinda critter popping out that hole... Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on September 13, 2015, 11:22:02 am Right !

Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on September 13, 2015, 12:50:21 pm Awesome, the steps look fiddly, will there be a railing?
Loving the critters! :D Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: GrimSnik on September 13, 2015, 03:06:53 pm that looks great. :) are models able to stand on the steps, or just the landing?
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Letchaï on September 14, 2015, 07:12:44 am Thanks !
Awesome, the steps look fiddly, will there be a railing? Not expected, I fear it is too fragile. They will have to put a hand on the wall (I should put a rope along it ? Aaargh extra work to do ! ;D )that looks great. :) are models able to stand on the steps, or just the landing? The mini's bases may be inserted between 2 steps (I'll do a photo with a mini next time).Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on September 14, 2015, 07:27:14 am It's cool that the mini's can use the steps...yep a rope railing would look good, sorry for the extra work. ;)

Let's go back to the minis now ! :) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement Post by: Lost Egg on September 16, 2015, 08:44:56 pm Cheers for the hand rail ;)
That is one cool building! Characterful and full of little details, it would be awesome to game on it. Congrats! When are you gunna build the rest of the settlement? ;) :D Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement: finished ! Post by: GrimSnik on September 17, 2015, 04:09:34 am that looks awesome. the coloring on the windows really make the whole piece pop and seeing the models interacting with the piece is super cool. and I like how the hand rail is on the building side so the militia can jump off the steps if needed. ;) ;D
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement: finished ! Post by: The Slann on September 17, 2015, 01:38:38 pm AWESOME! And almost in time ;)
So, now onto a Delgon city? :D Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement: finished ! Post by: Carcharoth on September 17, 2015, 06:21:49 pm Yup, that works :)
You can consider your prize well and truly earned now! Great to see the stairs working so well - thoroughly opens up the piece! Only question is whether devanu can stand on them? What about roban? ;) Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement: finished ! Post by: Crucium Giger on September 18, 2015, 09:57:35 am Absolutely glorious work!

When are you gunna build the rest of the settlement? ;) :D Errrr, no ! ;DSo, now onto a Delgon city? :D Errrr, no ! ;DYup, that works :) Cool ! :)You can consider your prize well and truly earned now! Great to see the stairs working so well - thoroughly opens up the piece! Only question is whether devanu can stand on them? What about roban? ;) The devanu can stand on them too, but the base exceeds a little. I recommend to Roban not to go up them ;D Now I have to think about a scenario setting this centerpiece ! Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement: finished ! Post by: Lost Egg on September 18, 2015, 03:59:33 pm You know...you need to paint up a civilian builder to stand proudly on her creation :D ;)
Title: Re: Scenery project: fubarnii settlement: finished ! Post by: Kryptovidicus on March 06, 2016, 09:50:46 pm That looks fabulous and would no doubt have won first Prize If it was finished in time ;-).
A marvelous piece, despite you saying 'no' to a city or a settlement, I do hope there will be some small additions like stables for the Knights or something like that :-). |
