Title: Taelan's Workshop
Post by: Taelan on July 19, 2011, 11:34:01 am
Hi All,

So begins my Fubarnii painting adventure. My Hasslefree order arrived a while ago but as expected Life(TM) had other plans.

Last Sunday I got a couple of hours to sit down, clean and set up the models for painting (Engineer and Trader). First up, the Trader at 80% work in progress and non-setup photos:

Trader with Casani Origins (olive tones)
(http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/trader1.jpg) (http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/trader2.jpg) (http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/trader3.jpg)

I'm tempted to remove the orb and use something else there instead, but may end up painting it as a glass sphere. The eyes are set up to be coloured with gold irises, so the pupils are overly large, besides that a few other details to go. Mounted on the classic Twilight base and a few finishing touches, then he will be complete. This and use a better camera! hah.

Overall, fun model to paint, responded well to washes and the surface was very smooth with little fuss cleaning mold lines. Enjoyed painting this little guy so far, my partner thinks they're just adorable. One question though, is there an article on the forum about Fubarnii fashions?

I'm still modifying the Engineer, so more on him soon.

At this point I think I'll work on models based around the Great Lakes, themed to suit. :)

thanks!
Taelan.

Looking good!
No articles from any Empire fashion experts as far as I recall... Fancy ruffs and ornate headgear are certainly in fashion, as are tail extensions (there is a thread on Fubarnii nobility somewhere). This traveller is a bit more practical in his garb, but those bright colours are certainly not out of place.
I like the choice of green, and the freckling looks spot on (excuse the pun).

The attention to the detail is what sells this one for me. The freckles, the buckles/jewelry, the eye catching use of blue... awesome.

I can't wait to see the engineer.

I really like the colour play, the orange is set off by the blue and olive very nicely.

Thanks all,

A contract I picked up has had me all over the show the last few weeks. Finally back home and in my studio, so onwards to finish the trader and complete the Engineer build :D

Appreciate all the feedback and comments on your favourite picks in the painting :D

Well couple of months since I last post in my project log. Snowed under by recent work, the best of reasons to be held back from modelling and drawing :D

I've been quietly mimicking the art style of Twilight. Progressing from some pretty shocking beginnings (squiggly outlines and terri-bad proportions) working my way up like a novice, when time could afford, to 50/50 success.

Suffice to say I feel I'm closing in faster with each sketch. This is my latest Enuk rider :

My own critique so far after stepping away:
  • Legs need to be more slender, longer even. (both mount & rider)
  • Neck needs to be about a 1/5th longer I think.

Love to hear some critique from the community, helps align what my mind's eye is seeing.

- T.

Looks good Taelan. One thing I'd say is that I'm not getting as big a sense of movement from the rider as I am from the mount; perhaps have the rider leaning forward slightly.

Apart from that, and your comments, I think you've hit it pretty much spot on.

The pic is drawn neatly and competently, but everything on the Enuk needs to be longer

And the rider needs to be leaning into the saddle at the implied speed

Nicely done tho. Getting there

Agree with Ben - looks good, but could do with tweaks.
Have you seen the alternate knight shields? They are bolder designs that might be easier for sketches than the original shield design (which I find a pig to get looking right at even a small angle).

Keep it up! I'll share the very nice pic you sent me when I get a few mins at a computer...

This is a piece I had on the back burner, a bit of judicious erasing, I finished in light of the points expressed. :)

I never did comment on this one did I? She looks great. The hat works well, even I'm not sure how she would pull her hood up  ;)
If I was being really picky I would comment that the enuk's front hoof is larger than the rear-facing ones.

Looking forward to seeing your market stall - I would like to do some scenery pieces and some inspiration would be fantastic!

Very nice  :D  That really sets a nice sceen and I like the detail.

Couple of comments, The fubarnii neck looks a bit dislocated to me and the enuk behind the drinking enuk looks a bit bendy in the neck. Maybe I've just got a thing for necks!

Wow Taelan. You've captured a sense of the market and it gives me the feel of a caravan that has arrived at its destination. Could be some inspiration for Bradlin here with the shops.

Cheers :D

I'll do those corrections, on review the "Guide" character certainly does have an odd neck for a Fubarnii. I'll also address the enuk in the distance.

Few more angle errors and the last couple of stalls, then into clean+details.

Always interesting what you miss without other eyes taking a gander. :)

Hi all :)

Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately will be awhile before I can do a similarly sized piece, I was lucky enough to have several undisturbed hours yesterday. Most of that encouraged the details folks are picking up on. There's even a small lizard snoozing on the far most shade cloth pole (right side), legs dangling over the sides.

I'll continue character studies, getting my Twilight eye in on the art style more.

Colouring of this piece? Hmmm, never thought to do it in colour, but sure :D Probably January, in the new year ;)

Best actually finish my Trader and Engineer too!  ;D

Don't colour it. I much prefer shaded pencil art to block colour for this fantasy kind of subject.

@Taelan - Having said that it is nice as it is so make sure you keep a copy of it in monochrome before you get all arty with the colours ;)

Hi All,

Firstly, happy new year gang. This wandering Engineer has found his way back home from Thailand. Quite a trip, avoiding where I could all the tourist molested spots for some rustic 'rural' island living. The less modernity the better I say!

During my travels I came across a few things fellow Twilighters might enjoy, trees and boat building! :D

These were within the grounds of the Kings Palace and Armoury, quite similar to Anyaral flora concept sketches :

(http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/twilight_tree1.jpg) (http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/twilight_tree2.jpg)

Longtail boat design on Koh Muk (Andaman Sea); I spent a couple of hours watching them work and even helped moving sections with the builders. Sweaty fun in the sun, the lead carpenter finally agreed to a photo of this initial build. Once the charms are wrapped about the prow, photos before launch are a no no. Left is a sea going prow, the right are Lake water, more blunt prow designs.

(http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/twilight_boat1.jpg) (http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/twilight_boat2.jpg)

I'm working on a trip journal write up, I'll post that and images elsewhere if anyone is interested in Thailand. I prefer scenery and location photos over classic "Me in front of.." imagery, so never fear ;)

Well settled back into the cycle of work and play 7 day week. :D

First up, fulfilling a promise to Michael that I would begin work on a colour chart for each Fubarnii race in Anyaral.

Colours of Anyaral - The Dhogu. (Click to see larger version)

(http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/colours_of_anyaral_sml.jpg) (http://www.eastern-empire.com/forums/twilight/colours_of_anyaral_lrg.jpg)

I took natural tones of leather and hide, grimy wool and a splash of green to accent the head. The mask uses a wicker cane finish, mostly to avoid darkening the face. Overall I've gone for earthy with guidance from Michael's Dhogu collection.

This is an initial layout, I am looking for suggestions on the swatches and in general; a community consensus on what colours best suit the Fubarnii race shown.

Thanks!
Taelan.

I love the artwork and format for the "colors of Anyaral" chart, and I think the palette for the Dhogu seems fitting too.  I agree that they should generally be dressed in simpler, drab or earthy tones but maybe a pale blue-grey, or possibly even a reddish-brown or pale terracotta color, might be nice for just a touch more color to the overall palette.

I have understandably been chatting with Michael in the background. The whole collection of plates will be sample suggestions, brief background and some author's notes.

Two major plates will be a map distribution and a series of variations on all the sub-cultures. A usual suspects if you will with further regional colours.

Definitely noting down all suggestions as a pool of sub-culture themes.

Main thing is, I haven't the spare time to evolve a visual source book, but I can create "Chapters" and evolve it. :D

Finally got around to finishing my Fubarnii trader. I tookt he detailing down a notch and came at it with strong flat colours and smooth highlights. Worked well and even added a hat to elevate his trader-cred. He has a PreePree crest style with his main robe stowed in his knapsack whilst travelling.. rather than grime it up ;)

I think ill have to read more into it and see if I can find something ecapsulating, artists, sages, youth all great parts of the nco story what are the others ? im thinking some good old mechanichal mech of the past to find out ?

Hi All,

Well, busy couple of months on various projects. I have of late been distracted from the Colours of Anyaral doing other Twilight related things (though not painting - yet) which has been a worthy diversion.

Nonetheless! Onwards the journal - The Eragu Concept (details adjusted recently, no horn, which was a interpretation error on my part)

My rationale was to project the size of these Fubarnii, their mass and strength, clan culture and fishing background. What better way than a team effort to haul a harpooned creature up the shoreline? :D

Hopefully they finish butchering before the scavengers get stuck in!

I'm currently colouring the final version of this piece; also redoing the proto-whale and avians in the background.

Well.. :-[ been more than a couple of months since my last update!

Amazing how much work can impact your free time! I was even considering actively helping out Mike with painting some models! It all started out on a couple of design projects, then I've ended up being flung about Australia and into Europe (USA next) as lead for rebranding and marketing a new visual tech. which is making big waves. So, after a week back from 2 months away, I finally got to look at some new Twilight models I ordered and photograph my current work to date!

First up, using my new camera, a Delgon Priest I've been painting up - next in the booth and fully lit :

And 'Swooping' Kosok I've been working on dynamically posing :

Soon to be followed by a swathe of characterful pieces I picked up:

Particularly happy about acquiring a Skerrat  :D

So much to catch up on, cards to finish and my artwork to merely post process to showcase here. The amount of times I put a couple hours aside to finish it.. jeez!  ::)

Look forward to posting some finished work before my holiday, so overall bring on 2013 and perhaps, an opporunity to paint more than three Twilight models in a year!

Very nice indeed. The skerrat and enuk are nice developments of ben's paint schemes (liking the colour choice and the subtle mottling).

The kosoks look like unpleasant scavengers - I really really like the dark shoulder colouration and the nasty head colour. I might have to steal that as the official paint scheme for the agoran kosok... ;D

I have to update my prev comment as the new views and the pj make the swooping one also look very nice.

I am just in the process of assembling mine in vanilla pose as I only have one.

Whirling Kosok (I think I need another photo angle on the swooper) I went for a leathery scavenger vibe.

These are lovely !
Be excellent to have these available as official sculpts, I think they could be mounted on very thin carbon fibre rods (as used in the smallest remote control aircraft).

The Kosok are an official sculpt (a devanu beast), but I love how Seb reposed them. I think I'll be using these as inspiration for arak's kosok... I'm pondering if I should do a dead KalDreman on its base (without his weapon of course).

Thanks for bringing this thread back to life Nick!
What wonderful paintjobs and conversions are found here.
I might steal some of these ideas.

Thanks guys, was fun doing these pieces up for my budding Twilight collection. They're packed away at present while I'm overseas studying. Looking forward to getting back to painting again this year.

Hi All,

Checking in from Auckland, New Zealand. I've returned after sailing for a few months professionally.

It's been grand to see the success of Twilight and the new models on their way. I'll be sending for my gear in Australia and setting up in Auckland in the next few weeks - more Fubarnii goodies to come!

Time to sit down with a coffee and read up the forums :)

best,
Sebastian/Taelan.

Thanks guys, been great browsing the forum and all the new member posts.

Sailing professionally, basically being trained commercial crew (licences etc) on yachts taking passage making trips internationally. Spent the last few months sailing from New Caledonia thru to Caribbean via a few stops and two separate vessels. Having a few miles in my Seaman's Book helps with further work locally, so no major runs for awhile - focussing on my Offshore Yachtmaster now.

That and getting back into some hobby time :D

Sounds like quite the adventure!
It isn't possible to have some hobby-time on board?

Certainly was - though with a single bag limit, no hobby time ;)
