Title: A Tale of... Artists in Anyaral
Post by: Carcharoth on April 29, 2012, 10:48:38 am
I was talking to Geckilian after Salute and he suggested I run a 'Tale of' painting challenge for Twilight. I had vaguely heard of these before, and it sounded like a very good idea! The general idea is that whoever would like to be involved pledges to paint a certain number of figures or a specific number of points before a specific deadline. They then post painted models here and generally encourage each other to build up our painted collections of models.

So, may I present... (drumroll...)

A Tale of Artists in Anyaral.

This will take place over the next three months, ending on the 1st August. The basic challenge is to paint a 300pt force from one or more of the cultures. On the 1st June, July and August I shall present rewards to everybody who has completed a force within that month - this will be a couple of bonus Twilight points as well as a badge you can put in your signature to boast of your achievement! There will be a badge for each culture for each month, so if you were ridiculously productive there would be a total of 9 badges. If you don't manage to complete a force within the month you can carry it over to the next month. Obviously there are easy options and hard options for forces, but all are equally valid!

So, how does that sound and who would like to participate?

I'll obviously sign up, but I don't think I have enough for 900 points for each faction unpainted... Hmm. Ponder ponder. i should manage 300 points for Empire, Dhogu, Devanu, "Traders" and technically Delgon should I manage the conversion and sculpting.

So is this 300pts per month or 300pts over the 3 months? I find myself a touch confused  ???

Thanks for asking for clarification - I don't want to be causing confusion!

The challenge will run for three months. If you want to you can aim to get 300pts done each month during that period, or you can aim for something a bit more manageable whereby you just do one 300pt force over the three month period.

Does that make it a bit clearer?

Post by: Lost Egg on April 29, 2012, 02:21:36 pm
Ahh coolies. I think 300pts over 3 months sounds much more manageable, though I will try and do more. How much painting time I get is all up to our little Jenta ;)

Well I'm already doing the Tale of Skirmish painters on Warseer and was planning on painting up WoT minis so I'm up for it. I am a bit tempted to paint up my Dhogu instead of my Empire Fubarnii but tis probably best to go with the ones I've built already, lol. Hopefully, some of them will be good enough for Pyre's competition too.

I think I will aim to paint up the Empire force from the Wandering Engineer Scenario, that's 280pts but I'm sure I will paint up the odd knight or two more which would help bring it up to over 300pts. Will we have a specific target to meet each month or is it just as long as we try and hit the end target?

Going through the models, the points certainly rack up fast once you add captains. I think I'll need to root through everything and make a list of what I actually have to paint now!

I'm in. I have a lot of other painting on my plate at the moment too, so I'll aim for 300 points in 3 months. I have my Devanu to do afterall!

Right, time to kick this thing off! Had a minor painting blitz today and managed the remaining 3 Grishak Kopa, 2 Dhogu Captains, 2 Dhogu Trappers and the last 4 Skerrat.

A group shot as the new ones look pretty much the same -
(http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll176/Geckilian/completekopa.jpg)

So far for month 1 then, 150 points for Devanu and 200 points for the Dhogu. Mike, I notice you said the most productive would get 9 badges, 3 factions across 3 months. Aren't the Dhogu a fourth faction?

Totaling everything I own Twilight-related which is unpainted, I managed this list for the Tale -

Dhogu
Yirnak Captain - 100
Dhogu Soothsayer - 40
4 Dhogu Spears - 60
2 Dhogu Bows - 30
- 230

Delgon
Malog - 250
2 KalGarkii - 20
- 270

Devanu
5 Kosok - 125
- 125

Empire
Herder Reyad - 50
5 Herder Light Cavalry - 100
Herder Captain - 40
3 Herders - 45
2 Hunters - 80
4 Graku - 60
Engineer Beru - 30
Commander Brenar - 100
2 Militia Commanders - 200
4 Militia Captains - 200
30 Militia - 300
Noble - 10
- 1,215

No points value
Belan
Laden Belan
Trader
Fubarnii Mounted Trader
3 Baruk
3 Laden Enuk
3 Enuk
2 Youngsters
Fubarnii Mason
Fubarnii Artist
Pree pree
- ?

Mike, will the no points value models have any attributed cost applied to them for the Tale?

I'll be thus attempting to paint all 1,840 points within the 3 months, broken down as best I can to manage at least 300 points of Empire each month. Unfortunately I'm 170 points short of a second Dhogu contingent, 25 points short on the first Devanu contingent and 30 points short on the first Delgon contingent. I'll be rummaging around to see if I can rustle up some points to fill those gaps - almost a shame I painted 200 points of Dhogu, various Jenta/Grishak, Priests and so forth before Salute!

Right, I'm likely to be busy over the next 3 months.

This 'Tale of' sure has come along at just the right time. I have been looking over my humble WoT collection that I have been meaning to paint up for quite some time. I love the little guys and they have made me feel guilty. So many painting projects always seem to get in the way. So I would definitely like to participate if you guys don't mind :)

I will (finally) paint up my starter set of miniatures and have just ordered a caravan of stuff including an unladen belan that I need for a special project I have in mind. I have always lurked and enoyed the painting work of others here, so its about time I contribute something as well. :)

Cheers for the comments guys! I've done some batch painting today, but generally taken it easy. I did want a break from the monotony, so picked a tiny critter to paint. Behold, the mighty (12 combat stones) Pree Pree!

He's absolutely tiny, and I'm generally pleased with how he came out. That gem on the forehead is miniscule, TuffSkull would feel right at home.

Mike, any chance models with no points cost will count towards the Tale at all?

Good point. All models are worth at least 10pts. A Belan is worth 30pts. Just ask here if you want to know what other models are worth.
Also, if you want to come up with house rules for a specific model then feel free - I will review them and they can then count towards your totals in some form.

Well I've been told to join this, so I'm in!

Devanu (250)
  • Grishak (x5) - 125
  • Devanu Sempa - 125

Need more Devanu!

Fubarnii (340)
  • Herders (x4) - 60
  • Knights (x2) - 50
  • Knight Captain - 100
  • Militia (x5) - 50
  • Militia Captain - 50
  • Engineer - 30

I'd probably lose two herders and a militia  to make it 300

Random
  • Pree Pree - 0

I've got a delay to pick up some liquid Green Stuff (seriously I might as well order it online, I'll get it faster than I can get to a shop!), so just painting bases. Two done so far!

P.s. Geckilian - I LOVE your pree pree.

At present, I don't think any of my forces total 300 points. However, I do hope to purchase some more before August, so may be able to muster 3 forces, that should be painted in time. So I would like to enter the fray.

Out of interest, how many points for Delgon Kaljoran (shocktroopers)?
Also, do Fubarnii hunters and Graku have points?

Cheers

Title: Re: A Tale of... Artists in Anyaral

Good to have you on board! :)

The KalJoran are 15pts a piece and the NuraKira is 15pts as well.
The Hunter is 40pts, then 15pts for each graku - the rules for the hunter are in the first (or possibly the second) traveller.
I'll sort out getting all the rules for the new stuff up and online soon - certainly the rules from book 2.

Title: Re: A Tale of... Artists in Anyaral
Post by: serin on May 06, 2012, 01:33:33 pm
Thanks, that means my Empire Fubarnii force is 300 points!

Devanu (225)

Grishak (x4) - 100
Devanu Sempa - 125

Fubarnii (350)

Knights (x2) - 50
Knight Captain - 100
Militia (x5) - 50
Militia Captain - 50
Engineer - 30
Hunter - 40
Graku (x2) - 30
Noble
Pree-pree

Delgon (290)

Strider - 50
Derakeers (x3) - 60
Shocktroopers (x12) - 180

Tom (my son) and I have painted most of these since Salute, so I assume they qualify. Just need some more Devanu and Delgon to bring up to 300 points each.

Tom wants to get Roban at some point, so that is almost a force in its own right!

Since there's a subforum up now I've started a new thread encompassing my pledge amount, everything done thus far and some new additions. Good to see more taking part, up to 8 people now.

Will you be taking part Mike? ;)

Ah yes, I meant to move posts around...

I could paint, or I could sculpt a rider for the Grakukan... I'm not sure I would have time to do both! :-\
I'll have a think though as it would be fun to take part myself.

Well then, clearly the rider is more important.  ;D

I've been thinking and I've decided to pledge to get a force painted. It's going to be a 300pt Knights of Orelan force. I apologise in advance that I might cheat a little bit and do some 'counts as' substitutions...

Lord Chelian (knight on Grakukan. Counts as Danomar) 125pts
4 Knights of Orelan (modified enuk knights. Count as house knights) 80pts
1 Orelan Captain on foot (Militia captain) 50pts
5 Orelan Militia (militia) 50pts

That's 305pts. All the models will be modified or sculpted from scratch... The plan is to do a few bits for myself that can then maybe be made available. I think I'm going to need all three months!
I might have to add a couple of graku for completeness...

that's a polite way of saying I've got carried away again isn't it  ;)
11 models shouldn't be too excessive, and the conversions will be relatively simple.
I'm hoping to manage it!

My first 300+ points  will be  Devanu

1x Arak-Katain    225
2x Grishak             50
1x Grishak Kopa    50
1x Jenta Handler   50
1x Jenta Alpha         ?

so 375 points plus the Alpa Jenta

Title: Re: A Tale of... Artists in Anyaral
Post by: Carcharoth on May 28, 2012, 02:42:01 pm
Count the alpha Jenta as 75pts for the contest.

Last night I applied some finishing touches to the 'award sigs'. There will be one sig for each of the three cultures (plus maybe a 'special' for things like dhogu if you want to do them independent of the Delgon), and three levels for each - bronze, silver and gold. You get a bronze if you do 1 month, silver for 2 and gold for 3.

I hope you like them!

As the first month of the challenge is drawn to a close we should take a moment to honour those who have stepped up to the mark and made a small place for themselves in history. Geckilian, guppug, Serin and megatron we salute you!

Geckilian and Serin deserve particular credit for completing 300pts for all three cultures. Geckilian was just showing off by doing the dhogu as well, but I'll sort something out for that sort of behaviour ;)
Guppug and Megatron also performed admirably, completing the Devanu and Empire respectively. Megatron went on to finish off the entire empire range, so is probably already set for the next two months!

As promised, you will all get some Twilight points to give you a kick start for this coming month. And of course you all get to display a 'bronze' AiA2012 sig for each of the cultures you completed.

Congratulations and keep up the good work  ;D

It's not showing off at all, the Dhogu are clearly another faction!  8)

I'm certainly looking forward to those points - they'll no doubt bring the Delgon up to speed, though I must admit I have no idea what to get next for them. With the entirety of the Delgon faction painted already, what would you recommend Mike?

Month 2 is almost drawing to a close! Looking forward to any last minute updates  :)

For month 3 I'm going to open things up a little bit and let you include scenery as part of your challenge. I'm thinking that a roughly CD sized piece of terrain (or collection of bits) would count for 50pts. If you do something more extravagant then share WIP shots during the month and I'll arbitrarily allocate a points value   ;D

Another successful month! Congratulations to Geckilian, Guppug and Serin  ;D

Geckilian is showing off once again, with 300pts painted for Delgon, Devanu, Empire and Dhogu, bringing him up to silver for the three main cultures and still needing me to come up with something special for the Dhogu...
Guppug has also done an impressive stint this month, with all three main cultures completed. With his Devanu last month that gives a Silver for the Devanu and a Bronze for the other two.
Serin's Delgon got bolstered with Roban leading another force, so he can have a shiny silver Delgon icon for his sig.

If anybody hasn't had chance to show off their month's work then I will give a day's grace, so feel free to post today otherwise they'll count for next month!

One more month to go and Serin, Geckilian and Guppug are all on track to get at least one Gold...

And after the final month of the challenge, we have more medals to award...
Hairy Norseman comes in late off the blocks with a group of Empire, earning himself a bronze Empire badge
Serin and Guppug all came in very strong with three more cultures completed each, giving Guppug a Gold Devanu and Serin a Gold Delgon (as well as two silvers in the other cultures for each of them).
Geckilian is just showing off, achieving a Gold in all three of the basic cultures and forcing me to create a special badge for the Dhogu ;)

I am really impressed with all the painted forces we've seen over the last three months! Thank you for sharing your forces  :)
