Title: More ramblings - any requests?
Post by: Carcharoth on September 16, 2010, 10:54:19 am
I think it's about time I did some more ramblings about Twilight...
What topic would anybody like me to cover? I'm open to requests :)

I would like to see a rambling (with drawings) about the environment.  Such as plant life, rock formations, weather changes, different climates, rivers & lakes, forrests, mountains, etc...  Are there Desert Fubarnii, Swamp Fubarnii? Forrest Fubarnii?  This topic interests me because it can impact the game as well.  I would like to make terrain that fits the idea of the world as well.  For example, it's o.k. to play game with a table full of palm trees or Christmas type trees, but I would really like to have/make trees that better represent the world of twilight.

Good question. Kinda broad, but I'll have a think on it. If nothing else I can dig through some old sketchbooks and see if there is anything worth sharing.

Well, to be more specific, I'm interested in the different types of plant life.  What is most common type of tree/shrub/flower/moss?  Are there any type of strangling vines, walking trees, or Fubarnii eating plants? Maybe toxic plants that spew toxic spores?  Are trees standard like in the real world, such as pines and oaks?  How exotic is the plant life?  I always like drawings.  ;)

Plant life would be helpful just in case anyone might be working on a secret game board which might include a few trees ...

I had a think about this last night and did a few sketches, but didn't have chance to scan them in.
One thing to note is that everything is different on Anyaral - there aren't oak trees and pine trees. However, the one general concession I've always made is that there is a great deal of convergent evolution and there are large tree-like organisms that happen to look very similar to oak trees and so on. You could argue that if it looks like an Oak then why not just call it an Oak, but I just like being awkward, and there will generally be differences when it gets to the details.
Another thing to note is that Anyaral is quite a big continent, with climates ranging varying from frozen mountains and tundra, through huge continent spanning forests, savannah plains and even to harsh desert wastes. The plant life varies a lot!

I've got family visiting this weekend, but hopefully I can get some time to share some more ramblings  :)

There is (I have just decreed) a tree with particularly large seed pods (think coconuts, but maybe slightly bigger) the centre of which are padded with fluffy, fibrous material.  This is spun into thread by the Fubarnii.

Ah, I think you are speaking of the Jeribo Tree that is commonly found in the woods around Larigal. Jeribo fabric is commonly used as it is hardwearing and takes dyes well (although it is often a little itchy).

Sorry for the threadomancy but it seemed the best place and not worthy of its own thread. I was wondering if it would be possible to get the ramblings on the forum of doom copied over here someplace? My work filter blocks the FOD and thats the only place I have time to read anymore. Also, the pdf link for chapters 1-3 doesn't work. Sorry to be a downer but I love what I've read so far and would like to see the rest.. then I can start really babbling! ;)

I'll see what I can do, but it'll be a rather manual process so might not be that quick!

Oh, dont worry about it then. I thought maybe you had them in a word doc or something. I'll give them a read when i'm home or something.

I was just thinking that I should highlight this thread again. It's been a while since I've done any ramblings, but if anybody has any questions about the world then here is a good place to ask them!

Aquatic lifeforms?

I bought some Eureka frogs at Salute to use as mercenaries. I also intend to buy some of their terrapins. However, I don't expect them to become canon  ;D

I would like more stuff on the Casani and Doghu, perhaps. But I haven't really studied the previous ramblings so I'm not too concerned.

While its always exciting moving into new species etc and very hard not to get carried away, I believe its important to make sure the main lines are well established first.
However, Im sure the odd merc character figure could be fit in somewhere and would make great variation in force line ups.

Brandlin.....I played WoW for a while and I reckon Murlocs* would fit well with an aquatic race. After all Fubarnii need a reason to be scared of water  ;)

*Murloc.....basically a humanoid frog with big sharp teeth.

yeah its a shame about fubarnii being scared of water as i've been hankering to do a laser cut ship/boat hull kit. The technique is ideal to make a proper planked hull rather than the slab sided gaming models we usually see!

Like said over a few mails I'd like hearing more life/lifeform in areas near water. Fubarnii might be scared of it, but in a world surrounded by water - it surely must have had some effect.

I have two areas I'd like a bit more info on please:

How about some more basic lexicon, and perhaps a pronunciation guide too? (Is it "Foo-barn-ee", or "Fur-barn-ee" or something else for example? Do they swear - nothing *too* rude, but they are often the words that seem to be learnt early on for example! And so on...)

The second area I'd love to read more about are the forested areas and their inhabitants, and whether there are any more "tropical" forests, marshes, bogs or swamps - if so, what are they like?

Title: Re: More ramblings - any requests?
Post by: Brandlin on April 20, 2011, 03:07:22 pm
i thought it was

Fur-barn-ee-aye.

Title: Re: More ramblings - any requests?

Well, I'd guessed "foo-barn-ee-ee" personally, although I do tend to run the last two syllables together out of laziness...

I thought that the first syllable was "foo" (or perhaps "fuh") as there is no R following it (as you'd get in "fur"), and the next syllable does have an R in it. I assumed the "ii" at the end was pronounced in the Latin manner, but I could easily be wrong there too.

Anyway, it seems that it could make a pretty good little ramble! :P

During games I tend to pronounce it 'tar-get'.

Foo-bar-nee
Or at least that is how it is pronounced in the central empire. Plenty of different dialects across anyaral though  :)

Tom has put a huge amount of work into the fubarnii language, so that is a good idea.

Noting the other ideas as well. The forests are a bit scary. Fubarnii go in but sometimes don't come out again. I'll have a think about the outskirts of the forests though.

Scaredy little things aren't they?

Surprised the get out of bed sometimes...

They are kinda small and a lot of things would like to eat them... They don't tend to let fear get in the way though, so they won't stay out of the woods forever.

I kinda see the same thing with the fear of water. They are scared of it but will go in if no other choice.

A typical Fubarnii 2 man craft would be similar to our own old coracles ( wooden framed semi-sphere covered in hide or bark). It would differ though in size proportions. A centre post with sturdy fixings for holding on. The distance from the centre to the outside of the boat would be greater than the estimated distance that water could travel if splashed over the side......plus a few hoof lengths for good measure.
If standing near river crossing points one can most likely hear phrases such as "hold on tight", "stop rocking" and "thank $&£* thats over !"

And yet they built a whole floating city too!

They aren't the sort to let silly things like fear or common sense get in the way of a good idea! Besides, if you are in a floating city then it no longer really counts as being 'at sea', you are just taking the dry land with you.

I'd like a rambling about Fubarnii art, music, folk tales, values and so on. Do the Fubarnii have myths that focus on anything other than the Enarii - might individual clans have folk heroes etc from the war against the Devanu? Do the Fubarnii consider rebellion a virtue (as a throwback to the Devanu war this might make some sense) or are they quite lawful creatures in general? What sorts of musical instruments do they use? Do they think much of art in general, or is it just a pastime of particularly nuts engineers? What about for the Delgon?

Another rambling that might be good is a better description of crime, law, and punishment in the Empire and Delgon realms and how it works and how it differs.

i think in fact that there is a map that details sea routes, so water travel is a defo.... mike?
