Title: Salute 2013 Display Board (very pic heavy)
Post by: paintedman on January 12, 2013, 07:16:45 pm
Hi all, I volunteered last year to build the display board for Twilight at Salute 2013.  After a very slow start I’ve been making some progress and felt like sharing it with forum users.

So a quick update on what’s been done so far:

As a cheat I’m basing the board on some of the tiles from the Citadel realm of battle board that has had all of the skulls blitzed from it.  The setup is to be a Delgon outpost, so the four hill tiles will be used with an option to include the flat ones if required.  Here are a couple of the board sections.

A large Delgon building is the focal point of the outpost.  The building is based on Mike’s sketches of Delgon buildings in another post and for a sense of scale I have placed it on a board tile.

The intention is for there to be three storeys with a look-out on top.  As of a few days ago the first building looks like this, and yes those are individual tiles on the roof.

In an effort to make things as uniform as possible as per Delgon culture I’ve made masters for windows and a set of large doors

And have now made moulds from latex and alginate to make multiple copies

More updates soon, once I've sorted some more of the board out.

Looking good! Once you've finished I might have to ask for a few spare windows and doors  :)

Will you be selling window/door castings at Salute?

Love the way the building is shaping up - should be a really cool board!  Hopefully I'll get a chance to swing by and check it out this year.

Depending on how well the moulds work and the quality of the resin I've ordered, I may have some doors and windows for sale at Salute.  Assuming I'm allowed to use some of the space on the Twilight stand of course  ;D.

After being sent home early from work on Friday and the snow made me almost completely housebound this weekend I’ve made some more progress on the board.  I’ve added the flying extension to the large building and made the base plate for the entire outpost.

Now, it’s time to build up the raised area of the outpost and start building the main gate.  As yet I’ve not cast any windows or doors, but may have some done later this week once I’ve trimmed the new moulds.

Starting to look very good, love all the details on the roofing, I guess that took a while ;-)

What is your intention with the base plate, will the outpost be raised off the board and how are you going to support the flying extension?

Will it all come apart for transportation?

So, not answering the questions from Halfmileduck, but showing that my mould making skills work in plaster.  Here are first castings for the door and windows.

Not sure which size of windows to use yet.  Any thoughts, anyone?

Looking good! I'm guessing that the small windows will work best, but looking forward to seeing them in situ to make a better call...

Hi all, it’s been a while since I updated this thread so here goes…

Progress has been slow but not completely stopped.  I’ve added the uprights for the observation deck to the large building and finished tiling the roofs.  I’ve also been busy casting windows and doors.  The ones in the picture below are plaster.  You can also see I’ve started work on the watch tower overlooking the road up to the gates.

These on the other hand are my first casts in plastic!

Here are some preliminary thoughts on door handles that will eventually be cast in plastic.

I’ve also been laying the foundations for the extended rock walls around the compound and have made a start on the compound gates (no pics just yet).

As the day looms closer I will try to post more frequent updates, aiming for once a week.

Any chance of seeing more close up's of the observation deck upright supports, I love the idea, what will the eventual finish of those be?

Will the mesh end up being extended rock walls then? If so will that be a mix of polyfilla and slate type rocks and how are you thinking of transporting the thing?

I love the doors, I think the ones with the handles closer together look marginally better, don't suppose you could share any experiences of casting stuff, something I've always fancied trying

Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing more updates!

@Halfmileduck

If you fancy trying casting, you're more than welcome to do some casting of windows and doors.  There are quite a few required, especially if people would like some.

It's all modular and designed for transport.  It just doesn't all fold flat, but it should take up just over a 2 foot square area.  The largest part is the extension to the hill top.

OK, mini update.  I've tidied up the door master with plates to hold the rings and more definition in the hinges.  I've included the original idea for the door handles for comparison.

Definitely an improvement and ready for mould making tomorrow.

Right, weekly update and a more complete picture of what is going on with the board.  This image shows the completed mesh skeleton for the rock walls and the proposed position of the buildings

I've added the watch tower overlooking the road up to the gates and more importantly, added the gates.  I've made a little more progress on the large building by adding some texture but am now waiting on a new mould to set so I can produce the doors.  Speaking of which, here is my new mould for casting windows.

And here is the first batch of windows ready to be washed.  These will be added to the large building's extension and then to the watch tower.

The next couple of pics show the entrance and a Fubarnii Herder Captain for scale and the view from the back of the board.

Next week the rock walls should be started and the large building complete, ready for painting.

It is Fricking MASSIVE! Good job mate. Looking forward to see how you approach those rock walls, are you intending to use real rock/slate in addition to good old filla?

No real rock is to be used, just plaster bandage and filler.  Should help keep the weight down.

Only a small update so far this week as I've been mostly casting more components to stick on the buildings and making tiles.  I've started the rock walls and have managed a single layer of bandage that has set incredibly hard.

I've also been working on the hinges for main gates, pics for those coming soon!

So a couple of weeks have passed and I've not posted many updates, but I have made progress.

Started painting the large building and have trimmed the mountain top extension to make it neater.

The above photo has a view of the ramp added to access the raised portion of the compound and the texture that I've added to the compound floor.

For this update I present a new single door for the watch tower,

and the support structure for the observation platform for the Beledraks.

Slowly getting there.

I know this is an old thread, but couldn't resist posting some praise.

What a wonderful looking table, it must have been great to play on and I'm sure people at Salute would have loved seeing the game in action on that great table.

Having a reasonable amount of experience with scenery building, working with resin and spin casting ... I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into building a range of wonderfully detailed models to would work well for WoT, this table has been great inspiration!

Cheers
