Title: Joek's painted Twilight menagerie...
Post by: joek on January 28, 2013, 08:34:42 pm
Well, as some of you may know (although I forgive you for not...I don't post on here half as much as I really should :p), over the last few months I've been blessed with the task of painting up Twilight figures for Mike. It's been a pleasurable experience to be sure, and - as yet - I've not been sacked. So, I'll continue, thank you very much. However, as Mike will no doubt concur, my photograph skills are somewhat lacking, thus I seem to spend far more time getting terrible shots of stuff I'm rather happy with. Consequently there are quite a lot of painted figures that have yet to be seen, and actually a few which won't be seen for a little while yet, as they're new and special :p

However, the first one I can show off is a new version of the Kosok - with apologies to Seb (Tael) for attempting to crib his colour scheme :)

Hope you like him/her/it (I'm not sure what sex it is to be honest)...

Very cool rendition, I'm liking the purple hue continuing through the wing roots also :)

I should have mentioned that Seb gets full credit for the colour-scheme! I very unsubtly told Joe to take inspiration from Sebs excellent kosok paint jobs.
(Not to detract at all from Joe's work though!)

I will also point out that he's also been a constant source of inspiration for me for a long, long time :) .

In the vein of group hug ;D Been amazing watching Joek start out awhile ago and then develop his painting, then own range of figures and expand his talent to being a professional painter too boot. /salute.

Doubly honoured to have added a core scheme selection to Twilight!

Looking forward to the next piece you do Joek.

After faffing about with the camera, I managed to get somewhat acceptable shots of the Grishak Kopa :)

Good to see! It should go well with bens Grishak!
Now I just need to get a little jenta cast up for you to paint...

Looks good Joek, usual best. Have to ask; what grass tufts are you using? Siflor?

Nice Kopa there, and especially nice to hear the jenta may be getting cast up soon.

The shorter ones are silflor, but the larger ones were from Army Painter...I'd run out and picked them up a while ago. Fairly sure they're the same, just rebranded though!

I seem to have misplaced any/all decent snaps of this Belan (laden with goodies), but I did this a while back.

I adore this figure - I wasn't quite prepared as to how big he was, and one day I really want to do another one. However, I was pleased with the result :)

And I lost photos for a little Prepre I did too, so here's a comparison shot of the Belan and the wee critter!

Slightly closer shot of the Prepre, sans base...

They're gorgeous Joe - really great work. Will you / these / WoT be at the Aldershot show next moth? Would love to see them in person & not sure I'll make salute this year :/

There's an aldershot show? I've obviously not been paying enough attention!

Title: Re: Joek's painted Twilight menagerie...
Post by: TuffSkull on February 05, 2013, 12:24:37 am
Indeed there is, but its hosted in Guildford.... obviously...

Its the Aldershot Branch of the British Model Soldier Society rather than a traditional wargames show, meaing its mostly large scale display models. However, they are widening thier audience to more gaming hence our involvement last year and this. The guy came to the Guildford club tonight to ask if we would be there again ourselves.

Its only a month away (march 2nd I think), but that seems typical. Its a small event and to be honest poorly organised, but dont let that detract from the level of painters it attracts. I did a hobby Brush Gallery for it last year: http://hobbybrush.com/historical/historicalmisc/abbmss/

I talked to JoeK at his stand there last year (assuming you're JoeK of JoeK miniatures... ). Cant imagine its a big money spinner for 28 and below, but its worth a look. We'll be having a couple of games tables there, but I'm not having much luck getting a portion of it set aside for WoT at the moment :(

Oh yes! I hooked up with Martyn from MDP for that one - little bit quiet, but there were some good things on display. Alas, my real life work has slightly limited my journeys this year :( . Salute is a definite, but also is Figureworld I think. Aside from that, I'm not sure!

WOW!

Gorgeous brushwork on both the PrePre and the Belan!  Only on the second go 'round did I notice the Belan's eye, which looks great and must have been tough.  Patterning on the PrePre is excellent!

Well, in the run up to Salute the mass Twilight Paint-a-Thon has begun in earnest. Not content with me sorting out bits and bobs for my own stand, I've been busy painting up all manner of lovely things for Mike :) . Good thing these are nice to paint, otherwise I'd have probably broken all my brushes by now ;) .

First up with some Fubarnii Militia, along with a couple of a Graku and the lead Knight. We're going for a desert scheme, and along with the two 'lesser' knights, they should hopefully make up a nice troop!

Work on the remaining two knights has halted whilst I get a rush on with Danakan and Muri though!

More soon...the flood gates have opened :)

EDIT: I should point out the bases are all the same colour - that original pic of the militia has completely changed 'em. Must do them all on the same background for future reference!!!

And those tribal marks on the Belan look familiar  ;)

Special Kudos to you on the pre-pre, that's a fancy pet!

Thanks Seb - I'm now going to be starting the final batch of figs before Salute, and I'll be using your Casanii drawing as the colour pallette :) . Really looking forward to this one!

However, I think Mike's put all these up on the Facebook page now, but for those who don't do FB (and I don't blame you, I really don't!), here's the latest batch of figs...There's a fair few!

Baby Grishaks (awwww...)

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/grishak1_zpsa9e41136.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/grishak1_zpsa9e41136.jpg.html)

NuraSen Plutom

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/plut1_zpsd8cc35a1.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/plut1_zpsd8cc35a1.jpg.html)

Knights

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/knights1_zps7811e6da.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/knights1_zps7811e6da.jpg.html)

Knights with the Grakukan

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/knights3_zpsd016bf03.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/knights3_zpsd016bf03.jpg.html)

And finally a (slightly fuzzy) group shot of all the themed Orelan militia.

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/deserttroop_zps03c47a51.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/deserttroop_zps03c47a51.jpg.html)

No time before Salute, but I rather thing the troop need a nice themed display base :) .

Have to say I've had an absolute ball with all of these - despite the time scales involved! I like to think of myself as fast, but this has pushed me a fair bit - definitely a learning experience!

Buy them all - they're lovely.

Splendid work, really enjoying the drab tones with the colour being sneaked in just so. The Enuk are my favourite piece colouring wise and the Engineer? My gosh - love him! (Mike knows this already, saw one in person and didnt stop gabbing for 5mins hahah)

Just hope my version of the Casinii works out...followed your colour scheme closely. Wish I had a little more time, but think it'll do the job :)

Title: Re: Joek's painted Twilight menagerie...

Well, Salute has been and gone and was enjoyed thoroughly by me - as both a trader and as a wanderer around the stands! Admittedly, there wasn't much wandering going around, due to the show being so bloody busy. However, I did manage to give my box loads of painted figures to Mike, and he didn't chuck them back at me at the end of the day, so I guess they did the job :) .

For those who didn't see him on FB, I did finish the Casanii before the show:

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/casanii1_zpsc48493a1.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/casanii1_zpsc48493a1.jpg.html)

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/casanii2_zpse5791c50.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/casanii2_zpse5791c50.jpg.html)

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/casanii3_zpsead4f2a7.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/casanii3_zpsead4f2a7.jpg.html)

Wonderful figure!

And now I've kind of started a bit of fun. Still Twilight though, but this one's kind of 'in my own time'...

I'm titling the piece: 'Get off my Mountain'.

(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh287/Joekarame/IMG_0897_zps5021384b.jpg) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/Joekarame/media/IMG_0897_zps5021384b.jpg.html)

Small amount of conversion work going on, and hopefully the base will make more sense when it's dried and painted...

For some reason these ones had a rather longer gestation than usual. I blame real life (tm) for getting involved.

Anyway, here are some of the Noble guards with the command upgrade kit attached...

And another with what I like to term as the uber standard...

A name hasn't properly been made for him yet (and I've warned Mike for a couple of ones he'd come up with because they sounded like Italian footballers...), but for now 'Proto-Fubarnii' will have to suffice :) .

Lovely paint job though perhaps a little too much blue for my tastes...though that might be the background.

I will have to expand my Eragu at some point though need to paint up my Dhogu first...so much to paint still, doh

Title: Re: Joek's painted Twilight menagerie...
Post by: joek on October 28, 2013, 08:44:12 pm
I mentioned it just now in the October releases thread, but I'm planning to do another one in more husky dog colours and see how that looks. For me, I think it works in blue, simply because it gives the feel of the cold, but...it was never meant to be how it ended up being!

It's one of the fun (and slightly scary) things about painting Twilight figures - I've no real frame of reference for a lot of new stuff, so it's kind of trial and error!

Title: Re: Joek's painted Twilight menagerie...

Sounds cool. Trial and error is good, it helps you find something you wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

I'm not certain on the blue, but he does look good as part of the group. It'll be good to have a different style for a second one to compare and see which you all think works best as the official colouration (although I don't promise to go with the majority vote  :) ).

Beautiful and extremely well done. I noticed a lot of your work is used for the KS miniatures.
From the start of this topic until the last pictures you seem to have gotten even better. Love the scheme on the Tahela!

It seems to have been a rather long time that I've neglected to post images up here! I tend to leave Mike to post the new stuff up on the 'new releases' posts, but thought it might be fun to see just what I've painted up for Twilight over the last few months! I've probably missed a whole load, but these were the ones I could find lurking on the computer ;)

Gil Mark 1 (of course ;)

Gil's little campsite...

Orelan knight (another to add to the troop. Have a knight captain to paint up soon as well)

Gil Mark 2 (Probably my fave bit of Twilight I've done so far really. Everything kind of came together rather well on this one!)

Finally, the latest batch of figures done over the last couple of weeks - a little troop of Dhogu :)

As ever, more to come! Might even try to post up a little bit more regularly :p

Beautiful work! I'm in awe of your skills with the brush.
I particulary like the Orelan knight and the skin colour of the enuk.

Absolutely stunning!

If only my Dhogu looked like that!

Nice to see what we should all aspire to! :-*

Lovely set of work mate...but for me the militia come out on top. I really like the grey armour with red shoulder pad, such a cool colour choice. :)

Beautiful, I like your strong colour tones.
The Kelahn is also very inspiring.

I echo all the positive comments. They all look great. Also pleased to see the cards sound as though they are progressing!

Great painting as always Joe, 'Big Toothy' being my favourite.
