Title: New sculpt - Big beastie!
Post by: Carcharoth on June 04, 2015, 09:55:32 am
Over the last couple of weeks I've been working on a new big beastie as a bit of a random project. He's a big fella (about 15cm head to tail) but hopefully I'll manage to get him cast in resin. In the meantime I thought I would share some quick WIP images!
What do you think? Any suggestions?

This is a superb sculpt, not sure how it would work in game (or for whom, probably the Kedashi).  Of course the could be part of a scenario objective, perhaps being herded along in a trade caravan destined for some rich Fubarnii in a city.  Actually as there is a giraffe feel to it perhaps they could be some part of the Casanii as I always got an African feel from them (well him)?

I think he's more of a plains type creature than from the deep forests, so more likely to be used by the Casanii or traders. First off, he'll just be cast as a stand alone creature (as I did with the belan), but he will get some stuff stuck on him eventually!
What do you think of the head and face (particularly the snout)?

this is  a really cool addition to the line.   :)

in the second picture, the head reminds me of a rooster or turkey and his left foreleg looks bent at an odd angle. the third picture reminds me of a pheasant in it's pose and shape while the head looks like a dove or pigeon.  I really like the first picture especially the head. I might be inclined to exaggerate some of the features like the crest or the brow a tiny bit more and extend and delineate the line of the skull as it connects to the neck.

AND THEN you could have Casanii in harnesses on the neck so when they go raging into battle the beast could swing over the opponent's Belan  and board it to try to hijack the goods while travelling on the Fury Road. uurrmm well maybe I've got a little to much Mad Max on the brain right now....    ;D  ;D

The Jurassic World effect ?  ;D
I'm totally convinced by the sculpt, it makes me want to add it to my collection ! I'm lovin' it :)

A mash-up between fury road and Jurassic world set on Anyaral! What could possibly go wrong?
I need to start giving the Casanii some more brutal weapons and outfits...
Ta for the feedback grimsnik. I'll see what I can do about the left leg as it is a little bit off from that angle - I'm working with beesputty though so it's not too easy to tweak the pose! I'll keep on working on the head. I've been told the mouth looks a bit like a sock puppet... Do you think I need to worry about that?

I think as it's a WIP it's just a matter of symmetry. I do quite like the head as it's shown in the first picture (the right side of the beast), but the opposite side doesn't appear to be fleshed out as much yet..... so I can kinda see the sock puppet on the beast's left side of the face, but not on it's right side which has a stronger jaw line and sharper/steeper (less round) down angle from the brow/forehead to the tip of snout.

Great sculpt! I would like a more beak-like snout though, as I think it is too narrow right now.
He really has a dinosaur feel to him and I can easily see him eating from these high top trees in the plains.

Hehe, I like it and I would buy it ;)

Release it on the 10th of June :P

Why the 10th?

I'm guessing Jurassic world is coming out on the 10th? I'm hoping it might be good, but I'm expecting to be disappointed!
This sculpt was more inspired by reading dinotopia to Lexie a couple of weeks ago. I don't think it's big enough for a full howda on it's back though!

I like it! It's the fleshing out of the world with creatures like this that draws me deeper into the world of Twilight.

Looks cool, I definitely get a giraffe vibe off her.

I think the snout either needs to be shorter and more beak like or a bit longer to make it prehensile so it can strip leaves from the branches, like a giraffes tongue does.

Thanks for all the feedback, it's Ben really useful. I've tweaked the head now so it's almost finished. I've gone with lengthening the about a little bit further to look more prehensile.
I'll try to take some proper photos once a it's been fired, as well as some that will give a better sense of scale.

Jurassic World is probably more of the same, the previous two already weren't so different from the first.
I like Dinotopia though! Are we going to see more animals like this? It would make a nice diorama: animals on the plains, stalked by some Devanu or Casannii.

Probably devanu stalking and Casanii protecting...
I enjoyed this sculpt, so there may well be more! What sort of creatures would you like to see?

I was thinking of the Casanii as they reminded me of the native Americans, stalking horses to catch and tame them.

As for more sculpts: some smaller predators would be nice!
There already are a lot of herding animals, but only the Kelahn, devanu and Grishak to hunt them right now.
But I think some more variants of Garkrid would be cool too, as would some kind of protoceratops/rhino beastie.
The big beastie shown on the Facebook page looks a lot better, the snout makes more sense this way.

Some updated photos! I hope you like how I finished off the snout.
The next job is hacking a couple of legs off so I can get him cast...

So do I! I might have to bully him into going to watch Jurassic world for inspiration...
I'm now wondering how I should do a howdah. Hopefully I can do a platform big enough for two or three small bases, plus maybe an integral rider perched on the neck. 30mm bases are rather big though, so that is a challenge!

Title: Re: New sculpt - Big beastie!
Post by: Kryptovidicus on June 08, 2015, 06:57:41 pm
That's indeed a challenge.
What about a howdah with an extra elevation, or have a howdah on its back with extra platforms on its side? If you do just a platform, it doesn't matter to have the bases sticking out.
You have to be careful to move it though, as the passengers can fall of that way..
This could of course be solved by adding magnets.

As for the rider, doesn't it make more sense to have him leaning over the beastie its head?
You could of course try something different, like putting him in a basket under the head or on its belly (a bit like a kangeroo) :).

If you place him under the animal's head, it might be controlled in a very different way than the usual rope or bit and tackle.  Perhaps with eye flaps, or something on the nose or ears.
Just thinking how the cultures on Anyaral are different from Earth and probably are using different techniques/methods to handle animals.

Having just re-watched Dinotopia, I think you definitely need a big "transport" beastie with howdah. It'd be a huge model though!

That would be fun to do - more of a one-off display piece though as it would be huge!

I've not been brave enough yet...

it looks great!  :)

one of things I've always liked about this world is the scale. I looked at the picture with the new sculpt and the smaller painted model side by side and thought 'now that's a big new beast'.   but then I looked again this morning and realized that the small model is a fubarnii on an enuk which had gone right past me the previous times I viewed it. so now I look at it and think 'wow this new guy is huge!!'   :D  :D

the breadth of the world being created both in terms of physical game play and in the story of Anyaral become more immersive for people because makes a story driven practical use of three dimensions. as humans we generally are only concerned with forward/back and left/right in our daily lives and not so much with up/down, so seeing how you develop the culture for people who live with Kosoks and Kedashi and these great big beasts that tower over everyone else is a real treat.

Title: Re: New sculpt - Big beastie!
Post by: Carcharoth on June 10, 2015, 04:49:02 pm
Don't forget that even mounted on an enuk the Fubarnii isn't that big a model  ;)

I've always loved playing around with variations in size (possibly blame the doozers...). Even within 'normal' humans the variation is incredible, so that's something I've worked into the world  :)

It's particularly fun working on the Casanii as I'm using them as an excuse for bigger creatures that should form part of their core forces.

There's another beast (the hadera) that I've not shared much about yet. Nowhere near as big as stompy, but still quite eyecatching!

I had never heard of a Brontotherium, so went searching for a picture... and found one.  :)

The Moropus might also be a good starting point for a new creature too.  8)

That period of huge mammals is great for inspiration! The brontotherium is very distinctive, but would be good for inspiring some more unusual tusks. I'm not sure I could imagine it as a mount though (although I've got nothing against sculpting beasts just for the fun of it!).

From dinosaurs to large mammals, evolution sure goes fast here ;).

The Chalicotherium is a bit apelike but would surely not look amiss on Anyaral.
Perhaps you can make him walk on his front legs like that alien from Star Wars 1 (sorry I forgot his name, the unfriendly pod racer)

Ouh, if pestering helps in getting the second jenta I might join in too! :D

Birdlion, sounds a bit like Antlion, ... you also mentioned you wanted a digging type of beast, which matches the Antlion as we know it. It also is a predator, ...
