Title: JohnDSD Painting Last Gasp update
Post by: JohnDSD2 on November 29, 2016, 11:11:03 am
They're not Casanni but I got them with my Kickstarter and the Casanni need someone to fight!

So as the grey dawn creeps across the Steppe of the Casanii lands a Devanu Kopa and his Grishak pack set out from some ruins, on the hunt.

Great choice of colours on the devanu - very distinctive!
That looks like 2pts of painting to me :)

These guys and gals look cool.

I'm not sure why but your choice of blue/grey on the Devanu makes him look sleeker and deadlier than normal. :D

I agree.

A great looking and deadly unit.

Thanks all.

I wasn't sure about the grey blue until I added the yellow and outlined it using a technical pen, it really made a big difference.
Telani and scouts next, so watch this space.

A fine selection of predators you've got there.

Soon Telani Deyanth and two trackers were on the trail of the Devanu hunting party.

If you're interested, there's something that helps me to get a nice wash deep into the crevices of the wraps on the spears and fletching of the arrows.

I get some flow-improver from the local art store (Michael's around here) and mix it with some GW Lahaimian (?) medium and then some Army Painter Strong or Weak tone.  That's my wash.

Before using it, though, I brush on some gloss varnish over the areas I will wash and let dry.  Keep that layer very thin.  You don't want to fill in the gaps you're trying to shade.  This step gets the wash to gather in the cracks and crevices instead of changing the color on the surfaces.  The Lahaimian (?) stuff will make it matte again, don't worry.

If I don't use that gloss varnish, it can still turn out okay.  Might have to touch up some highlights, though, but not NEARLY as much as if you use a straight wash, like Delvan Mud.  That stuff doesn't gather in recesses so much as darken the whole surface.  Different tool, different job.

Stepping up a gear for the final month! Well done  :)
I would love to see a full group shot if you get a chance!
Have you tried a game of Loranti and his Casanii bodyguards against those Devanu?

Some lovely paintjobs.
I also dig the bases, simple yet very pleasing to look at.
