Title: Tonio's Scenery - Fubarnii balloon
Post by: Tonio on April 23, 2018, 05:01:05 pm
Hi, new member here, fan of the look of the game and minis for a while, but just jumped in with the contest running right now.

I got some minis in the mail for the painting side, but I want to do a terrain piece for the Freestyle category, so here I am. I'm going for a balloon attached to a two-story tower. I will probably be short on time, so I'm concentrating on the balloon only at first, and if the deadline is too close, I'll skip the tower and only attach to a tree.

Right now, it's mostly sketches and some tests for the balloon texture. (Relics mini as a placeholder.  ;D)

Cheers!

I have a blog entry that is more verbose, but contains the same pictures, here:

Really excited to see this one develop!
Neat use of the cheese cloth  :)
I’m wishing I had added a few more random scenic bits to your order now...

Would have loved that. There is always next order; it's not like I got enough stuff in that first one. Always need more minis. :)

Test balloon painting successful; the glue holds well and it takes drybrushing no problem. Cut the 3 real balloons and covered them.

Cool! I look forward to seeing the final piece.
If the sketches are any indication, the end result will be a real eyecatcher.

That is working fantastically. I won't complain that the balloons are too consistently sized - you've obviously got a more organised engineer working on your balloon that the usual random ones I find  ;D

I must say that I love the texture you've done for them... When I eventually do a proper balloon I may have to try and borrow that technique.

I didn't think about that at all. Now that you mention it, it would have been a good idea. Won't ready it, but I ever need another balloon vehicle, I'll keep that in mind!

Oh, and borrow away!

3 official balloons all painted. I also marked them with a small dowel to make grooves for the ropes.

I also started the boiler. The main part is about done; I'll just add pipes that go to the propeller once I have the basket walls figured.

Redid the base of the basket smaller to fit the official minis I got yesterday.

I also roped the balloons. They will just be missing the straightened ropes that go to the basket. I migth drybrush them a but too.

Fellow Twilighters (is there a name for fans of the game?), I ask for your help. I seem to have hit a wall with the basket of my balloon. The balloons themselves are made, I know how I will do the ropes to attach between the balloons and basket, how to do the boiler and propeller. That's all fine.

However, I can't figure out the look of the basket itself. The (fantastic) art pieces show the balloon from pretty far, and we never really see the basket in detail. There is one drawing, from the September challenge I think, that does show one, but it's a really intricate and fancy one, with a pretty different look.  Is there some closer view of some baskets out there?  Do you have a mental image of how you think they look that you can share? I'm all ears!

There's a picture of one one inside of the rulebook cover which shows the basket clearly.
But then again, I suppose both a woven or bucket style basket make sense too.

This looks fantastic!
Looking forward to seeing the end result, but will definitely be considering these techniques when creating my own balloons, thanks for the share! :D

I finally settled on a simple basket like the first one I sketched, instead of a more elaborate one. The balloon will be an observation platform more than a transport method.

The base is a plastic Easter egg. I pressed the putty on a blanket for texture. Balsa for the floor, and balsa+putty for the wooden rail.

I now need to add nails and ropes to attach the outside canvas to the frame, and prepare the attach points for the balloons.

Is a week going to be enough time to finish it?

The balloon itself, yes. It's almost done, mostly paint left to do.

However, it's pretty sure the tower is a no go without a day off this week. I had started to cut my tubes out, but I don't see it happening, as i also have to paint my critter.

I'm working on the balloon for another friendly challenge at the same time, which end a couple weeks later. Hopefully, even if I don't have the tower done for the contest, it will be done by the end of the month. :)

Been working on the ropes last night, make another couple reinforced ropes for the support.

I also started to assemble the tower. Basic shapes done, and started working on the wooden support details. Not a first material wise, judging by the other terrain thread I've seen around here.  ;D

The roofs' basic forms are done. I now have to do the tiling, and small details like the chimneys.

I also built the balcony. The main tower part was smaller than on my drawings, so I had to cut a bit into the roof, as well as move one wooden beam on the attachment tower.

I will put the building on pause now, to paint the balloon basket. It shouldn't be long. as it's already primed and ready to go. All the ropes have been strengthened with brass rod/steel wire and glue. The ropes from the basket to the balloon are a bit more flimsy that I would like. I might have to redo them with the wire, or bigger rods. The ones that will anchor to the tree and building are strong enough though.

I also need to work on the temporary base before the end of the weekend.

Wow, that is a really cool, but weird, building!
It's an entertainment park grown from a fairytale garden, using the drawings from Anton Pieck.
The park itself prides itselves on buildings like these, giving it a cosy and unique feel and many attractions are based around it named after fairytales.
Your pointy towers reminded me of the buildings over there.

Thanks guys. It's coming along quite well. :)

Good start on the temporary base for the balloon. Texture all done. I didn't work on the end of the branchs as they will be flocked. Will spruce up the base tomorrow, then it's paint and flocking time. It's gonna be big!

I also included a fake shot with the tower for v2, as I will be able to reuse the tree.

Superclever, it's like the balloon got stuck in the tree's branches.

Your sculpting skills are something else, I noticed on your site you're also doing commisions. Why not add terrain building to the list? You might get a lot of interested people.
The level of detail in the work you do reminds me a bit of Rob Hawkins, who's often doing boards for shows.
https://robhawkinshobby.blogspot.com.au/?m=1

On a different note, what kind of putty did you use for the basket and the tree?

Title: Re: Tonio's Scenery - Fubarnii balloon
Post by: Tonio on May 13, 2018, 03:10:05 pm
That positioning was mostly for the picture. It will be floating a little bit above the tree for the final shot, held by a wire.

I have done some terrain as commission, mainly the boards for Endless and Brushfire found in my gallery. I don't do much, as I only do that in my free time, and most people don't want to pay that much for terrain. However, it is was I enjoy the most doing.

I've been following Rob Hawkins for years. :D Got multiple tricks from his work.

The grey putty is Aves Apoxie Sculpt.

Almost done with the temporary balloon base. Might have gone overboard with the basing that I'll probably rip out. Just need to tweak the foliage colour and attach the balloon.

It has a bit of a Ying-Yang effect with the light colours of the balloon and darker foliage on the tree.

I have not really touched the building in the past weeks, as I'm concentrating on a sculpture. However, my son really likes the wip building, and he asked to make one with me, so we started that this weekend. Smaller, one story building, and we're using a happy meal toy roof instead of building it all from scratch. :)

It is indeed a Smurf roof, came with a Happy Meal McDonald toy. Saved an handful of them for terrain projects. :)

The sculpt I'm working on right now is a stuffed animal hippo ballerina. Since the photo, I've smoothed out the tutu. I'm almost done with her; mainly got to add the stitches in the back and the tab under the feet.

It's mainly practice, both for sculpting and casting. I love chibi and other cute and cartoony style, so it's not a shore as a subject. I also find it a bit easier, more forgiving, than regular minis at a similar scale.

Right now, it's just some home casting, but I might want to have a official store eventually. I've gone through two molds of the unicorn now, and I'm retiring it, as it takes more of my hobby time than I want to pass on casting, at least as long as I'm not better equipped.

You should seriously consider whether you could get those components cast.

I know your pain when it comes to sculpting shingles!

Thanks Mike!

I could certainly get the doors and windows made separately, if people wanted them. The smaller roof too, as it's for a standard pringle size, even if that might be a bit big for the the kind of home casting I do. I just don't know if people would buy it. Wasn't there already a set of stuff like that available in the past by another forum member?

Thanks Lost Egg. :)

Almost done with the small roof now, and good progress on the big one too.

It’s the standard dilemma whether to just get it finished, or try to get sections cast up (but risk disrupting the creative flow!).
Brandlin did a lovely little laser cut set, but he stopped doing those a few years ago. I know there would be a nice level of interest in the roof... I’d like one for one thing!

Shingles are done on the small roof, I just need to add a joint between the top row and the chimney. Getting closer to the top on the big one too.

Lovely. Whats the plan for the end of the balcony?

Thanks!  It is open ended voluntarily, as a docking platform for the balloon, hence the concave curve. :)

I do need to add a winch or other contraption to attach the balloon to, that will go on the balcony.

Amazing!!
I’d definitely buy cast roofs if you’re of a mind to make them available..the balcony too.
Looking forward to seeing it painted.

Getting cast of the smaller roof is in talk, as well as other small accessories (doors, windows, etc). The big roof and the balcony probably won't happen though.
