Title: Languages (and noises) of the races
Post by: darth tater on May 11, 2010, 07:21:03 pm
Couple of things I've been wondering.....

How do the Devanu communicate?
-Like Raptors in Jurassic Park 3 with short barks.....
-in English, or like the Skeksis in Dark Crystal.....
-Like Slythe in Thundercats.....yessssssss........
-sign language.........

I imagine they have a vocal language so the Fubarnii when enslaved could understand them?

Also the animals of the world.....
What about Grishak, do they go RAWR or SKWARK?
And the Kosok?
Are Baruk just giant cows that go mooooooooo?
Do enuk make noises?

thanks  ;D

This ties into what I have been wondering - what is the equ. of Chicken, cow, rabbit etc? What do they farm? I would love to get an animal pack that could be used in basing or for the general village feel.

Me I think that chatter like a squirrel.

We have the scavenger but thats more of a working animal/ pet. I was thinking something like our Border Collies while sculpting it. I am working on something similar but more reptilian and theres others planned too. I also like the idea of "non military" settings. As a side project Im on with a campfire setting which will include a fire, cookware, drying rack etc. Looking to include foodstuffs too which will be mainly fungii and insects.

The Devanu have a spoken language that is heavy on clicks and plosives.  A few Fubarnii did learn to speak it, though some of the sounds are quite tough for a Fubarnii to produce.
I'm not sure about the Grishak, but would vote for SKWARK rather than RAWR.

Just for a moment Bethar, assume that some of us mere mortals don't have doctoral degrees in alien linguistics and lets us know what a "plosive" is. I'm an engineer from a defence industry background - as far as i'm concerned 'plosive is somehting that goes BANG! ;)

There's a wiki page on the sounds of the Devanu language, for those who are interested: http://fubarnii.pbworks.com/Devanu-Phonology (http://fubarnii.pbworks.com/Devanu-Phonology)
Put simply, plosives are sounds that go bang. Things like 't', 'p', 'b', 'k', etc. Although Devanu doesn't use 'p' or 'b', since Devanu don't have lips...

What about music? What sort of musical instruments do the Fubarnii use? Does the military use a drum or bugle, or something else?

My initial idea (without knowing any instruments), was the Fubarnii might be more lively, almost a folky sort of music, and I thought the Devanu was probably more of a Japanese/oriental flavour.

I'm all for a mixed SKWAWR for the Grishak.

Is the Wiki canonical? Is it "open", for that matter, or is more of a private brainstoming thing for you Enarii? I didn't even know it existed!

It was a place to store our random ramblings... It was never strictly meant for public consumption, but I guess there is nothing wrong with anybody plowing their way through it if they are feeling patient - as with the old website it's probably more often right than wrong, but we completely reserve the right to ignore/change anything in there! Feel free to cut and post sections from the wiki for discussion if you have a browse and find stuff that looks interesting!

I expect there might be some bits that are meant to be 'secret', or apply to another version of the world that doesn't match the one that's been created, so if I see stuff like that I might cut some conversations short and apply some hard handed censorship  :)
