Title: Twilight Artwork - Mike Corriero
Post by: Carcharoth on January 15, 2011, 06:47:16 pm
I recently contacted Mike Corriero (http://www.mikecorriero.com) and asked if he'd have a go at doing some artwork for Twilight. The first stage in the process was for him to do a number of thumbnails.

Sadly he missed the point a bit on the first couple of sketches and we ended up with some very nicely drawn hooved lizardmen.

It was back to the drawing board after those, and the next two came out much better. There are a few things I would have liked to see changed, but not too bad a take on the basic Fubarnii form.

The final two sketches were of Brenar and an Enuk Knight Captain.

What do you guys think?

Yeah last 2 are getting there.

These are sick. Whenever I try to draw Fubarnii, they end up looking like Quar  ::)

I didn't realise Brenar had his foot (hoof) in the air, so the spear looked a little strange but it makes sense now.

I think the most unsettling thing about #03 is the length of his arms, but I think the latter four are great representations.

Though the first two aren't right they still look cool.

All in all a nice set of sketches.

I checked out the link and it seems Mike Corriero looks like a great artist to work with on twilight; he even has round buildings in his banner! Seriously though, great stuff.

I like all of these sketches

The last two really catch the spitir of the high level military, and the middle two are very close to Marks herders and (although bulkier than them) the initial militia release

The top two sketches could work really well for a more feral type off shoot from the fubarnii tree... I see both the fubarnii and the delgon as fairly civilised and "soft" - maybe these could be a mnore rough hewn cousin - or even more disctant relation

Did you pay Mike C for these, or do you happen to know him somehow?

The knight in particular is perfect, #3 on the other hand vaguely reminds me of the slitheen from a few series of Doctor Who ago somehow. But yeah, definitely fantastic work.

This was pretty much a tester to see what Mike would come up with, and if I could work with him going forward. So it was a proper piece of paid commission work.
I'm glad you guys like them. I was of mixed opinions about the final results, but I am always wary that I might be over critical when it comes to other people drawing Fubarnii (and I was also feeling miserable and ill when the final sketches came through, which didn't help).

The first ones are too removed from basic fubarnii to even be a different offshoot, even though I do think they are probably the best drawn pictures from the set. I'm not sure why the knight has been inverted from the original imagery (Fubarnii are typically left handed, and the insignia is on the wrong shoulder and inverted - that can be easily fixed though!) and I felt that the enuk looked much too skinny. Perhaps I was a bit harsh in my first assessment though and the images are slowly growing on me.

Well, I felt the Knight was excellent and #4 was also great. Taking a second look, Brenar looks... wrong, somehow. I think it's the spear probably. And #3 does look very like the slitheen. I mean, I'd say it depends how much the guy charges and whether you think it's worth it. These are fantastic in terms of detail, but I don't neccessarily see them as vastly better than the sketch artwork Twilight's had thus far, which is also consistently lovely and gets an in-world feel very well.

The last 2 pics are good, but for some reason - doesn't scream twilight to me.  Maybe it is the shading or age lines on these Fubarnii.   I always felt that the twilight drawings were a little, not sure what the right word is, but maybe a little bit cartoonish?  I think that is what makes Twilight unique, gives it it's quirkiness.  These pictures look all fine and dandy, but I think they belong more in an rpg book.

Otherwise, the pictures are nice, just not used to seeing such fierce Fubarnii I guess.

This, but I also think that this work sits besides your own quite well. You guys even share forenames, and that's supposed to bias you towards him ;)

Do you have any similar bits by yourself that you could side by side with these for us? And had Mike Corriero seen the painted sculpts, or your own sketches, for that matter?

better post a bit so peeps dont think Im a bot - just a lurker  ;)

my initial thoughts on the first two were that they were really really old; the style is sort of right, but they just looked wizened.

@scalifano - do you realise the last 2 (Brenar and knight) are already cast up?

Yup, I have both models, currently unpainted (doh!), but at least assembled :)

I just liked a different art style for Twilight.  For example, look at Mike's Avatar for the Fubarnii Knight Captain.

I would really like to see more drawings, before I pass total judgement though.

Welcome ork56! Glad you aren't a bot  :)

The reason for talking to t'other Mike in the first place was to see how Twilight art could look when done by a professional artist. I'm pleased with the overall style I've developed for Twilight, but I'd like to think that the basic design is strong enough to cope with a slightly different approach. I shared a bunch of different reference material with Mike at each stage, as well as images of the sculpts themselves. I would actually like to have Mike do lots more art for Twilight, but I'm not sure if that will happen for a while at least.

For the moment I'm going to be doing all the artwork myself - I've been doing a few sketches for the Delgon forces recently and I'll try to share a couple of them over the weekend.

Mike

Very spiffy, but I agree the first two aren't funarnii!  Even with the next two - having recieved a few rebukes myself - I can see little errors, especially around the head and mouth. ;)

I actually dislike them all. Not to say I dont acknowledge they are well drawn (they are nice).
I feel the real world of twilight has only been captured by mike's artwork. Something about it seems really real to me, like they belong.
The last couple are the best capturing the movement of Brenar and The 'nobility' of the knight but its just missing something to me at least.
Give me the artwork in the core books any day!

I like the unarmoured figures as they show the anatomy of the world of Twilight which has a deep feel to it.

It's important to provoke a feeling and not just relate everything to combat which is only one part of our hobby.  ;)

I really like the drawings of Brenar and the knight.

The first two are obviously way off. The middle two are okay, but there's something about them that just doesn't feel right. Although maybe that's just me???

I think it would be great to have more than one artist producing work if it frees Mike's time to sculpt and write and do other stuff. But it is important to keep everything under a single "vision".

(One thing I really like, in general, are the "little things" scattered throughout the rules  - the mushrooms, little critters, artifacts, etc. I think those add tremendously to the overall flavour.)

I completely agree, They feel indifferent to the world of twilight, Theres no soul again not to say there bad.

Thanks for the comments. I'm it wasn't just me who wasn't sure on the pics - they are technically very good but they never felt right. I guess I'll just have to keep doing them myself until I find the right artist to help out!

Mike, have you ever tried contacting Sequoia from Josh's site (zombiesmith.com).  I think Sequoia's art style would lend it's self well to Twilight.
