The World Of Twilight

Been trying to improve my digital art recently and found my mind wandering around things that I feel would fit into the Twilight theme of things. Random stuff really. I like sculpting critters though so some might end up as putty practice too.

How about showing us some of the mythical beasts that the fubarnii have - you know fubarnii equivalents of minotaurs, dragons and such...

I like the colouring on the bird too.


Have you tried blocking out colour with a harder, opaque brush, and creating from with lighter tints/hues of the same/similar colours in order to create structure/form?

Its not that difficult once you have a pen/tablet. Well like all art form you have to have a creative side to begin with but actually drawing on the pc is no different to drawing with pencil and paper. Saying that I find digital much easier to vent my madness. It also means no scanning of sketches.
These things are totally from my own head with a bit Twilight influence. I have a few of Mike's sketches but nothing that hasn't been seen publically really so I wouldnt want to guess at what is canon.
Random doodles is all they are really and if I like one enough it may be puttified. If Mike likes one enough it may even be tinnified.  :D

I basically start with a very rough sketch. If I like it then I will add some colour with airbrush. Usually a base colour then some shading. Then I will put some highlights on with a lighter shade. Im very erratic tbh.
The first 2 were done with a free program called Smoothdraw. Pretty basic but good for free as it has pressure support. Bird was done with Alias Sketchbook and its much nicer to use. I have Painter 11 too but thats getting a bit serious really. I like Sketchbook as its smooth and simple.


BTW the Birdy is usually found following alongside Baruk picking off parasites. Been known to nip the fingers of curious Jenta too.

All cool :)  They are a leetle bit too wide, though. I haven't set any image limits on the forum yet, but you might want to scale them down a bit.

Oh, and the first two have teeth. We don't have any phyla in Twilight yet which have teeth. Not saying there couldn't be any! But they'd have to be very distantly related to all the existing creatures.

Yes, but that is my problem - lack of talent, can't draw with a pencil either... :)

I caught a few minutes of the reruns of "Walking with dinosaurs" with my son tonight and it struck me that the Placerias creature (1 ton herding herbivore reptile forerunner of true dinosaurs) is beaked and tusked and fitted into a twilight world pretty well....

I might play with them a bit at some point and add them to the menagerie. What they are missing at the moment is some sense of scale. The Godnow looks like it is probably quite small, feeding on little creatures on the forest floor. The big forward pointing eyes are nice and distinctive.
Tom is right that none of the enuk style creatures have teeth, but I have drawn at least one creature with teeth - the Grimblar. That was a long long time ago, so he may end up being tweaked, but I've nothing against teeth in general!

The maggoty thing looks nice and unpleasant. Again, how big do you think it is? What does it eat?

Cute little bird thing. I'd actually be tempted to give it a second set of legs so it ends up as some sort of flightless bird-monkey. What does it eat with that huge beak?

Godnow I imagined pig sized and was initially meant to be a downward facing grazer. Teeth could be replaced by chitin type plates for shearing grass etc.
Maggotty thing is around 6 feet long. He is a nasty predator in fact that homes in on ground TREMORS to suprise attack animals from beneath.

Hmmm... Tremors eh? Only issue I have with that is as to the actual feasibility of fast moving stuff underground. I could maybe imagine it waiting underground and erupting out of its hole to stun victims and then devour them?

Ooh yeah Tradpoor Maggot......yummy.

btw the bird is around a foot tall but has a massivly high motabilism. This means its forever eating whatever it can get, and being omnivorous it really does eat everything. The large beak acts as a food store for when there is too much food to eat so it can store it for when the stuff its swallowed has moved on enough to make room. See its always anxious in case it doesnt see any food for 5 minutes.

Oh and please dont take my ramblings as being definite Twilight creatures. They really are just ramblings of my imagination. If Mike likes something and wants to further it or nick the idea then so be it.

Always good to have some more ideas for inspiration!
Darth Tater suggested I launch a little creature design competition, and I think I may well do just that. I need to think of a suitable prize (maybe a few Twilight minis and the potential to see your creature as part of the range) and then advertise it... Does that sound like a good idea?

I could imagine Klute's little birdy being a cross between a hummingbird and a vulture. Now there's a nice image.

Not far from how I imagined it actually. A mini vulture on speed...........but without wings.

I drew a bunch of creatures at some point that widened out the range and belonged to different classes and orders - must dig them out and try to remember what they were...
