Title: Delgon unit names
Post by: Carcharoth on February 20, 2011, 01:57:15 pm
I'm going to do a quick straw poll here as I'm a little bit stumped and would like to hear your opinions. I'm working on the new rulebook which is heavily focussed on the Delgon and I'm trying to decide how best to refer to the various units. In the hasslefree shop at the moment all the units are called by 'english' names, such as Priest or Bodyguard etc. Should I stick with those names in the rulebook (with perhaps the Delgon word in the description), or should I use the Delgon titles throughout (with perhaps the English word in the description for a bit of context)?

Using the Delgon words would possibly add to the general setting, but may be harder to follow and more inaccessible. I'm possibly tending towards the Delgon words, but I thought I'd see what you all think first!

For reference, the titles are pretty much as follows:
Nura Gan - High Priest
Nura Sel - Priest
Nura Kira - Senior Acolyte
Nura Len - Lesser Acolyte

Note: 'Nura' is a general title for priests serving within the military order.

Kal Dreman - Bodyguards
Kal Malog - Striders
Kal Garkii - Soldiers
Kal Dru - Deraks
Kal Joran - Shocktroops
Kal Gush - Gushak

Note: 'Kal' is a title given to all front line troops serving under the Nura.

I like the in world names, but yes they can get hard to follow.  I like how you listed them in your post.  I think you should always use both names. ie: "Nura Len - Lesser Acolyte"  or  "Kal Malog - Strider".  Or if you make more cards/2nd book for them, you can list the in world name big and bellow the in world name in smaller font, the actual model name.

ie:
Nura Len
Lesser Acolyte

Neither!

You should go with the names that I make up for them ... Akin to my names for the various beasties  ;D

In-World Names I think is best.  Having a subtitle or immediate description of 'bodyguard' etc, would be helpful- that way it might be more recognizable for the hasslefree webstore & easier for them to use those titles.. but maybe it's not an issue.

The empire has plenty of cool toys! Their inventors just tend to forget about them before doing anything useful... The Delgon engineers' toys are more carefully 'looked after', usually by their attendant priests.

The gushrak (or gushak in the Delgon dialect) is seen throughout the empire and is generally used for applying noxious fertilisers to farm crops.

But getting back to names... Theres a slight preference for sticking to in world names, but nothing too conclusive just yet...
