Title: My Quar and Other Assorted Stuff
Post by: maccioniath on April 30, 2011, 12:55:28 pm
Before I finally broke down and bought into Twilight, I spent a lot of my hobby time on Zombiesmith's Quar line. Their site is over here: www.zombiesmith.com

At any rate, these are some of the Partisans and Crusaders from them. I have Royalists, too, but they're not pretty to look at and need repainting....

Lovely Quar there! I've always been tempted by those figures, but managed to resist in the end.

Thanks! I said the same thing about Twilight for a long, long time... ask Mike how that turned out! ;)

Interesting looking figs. I have seen this line before but I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

I like your paint jobs and the ruin is very cool with the fallen statue.

cool quirky minis with great paint jobs!  :)

I like all your terrain too

Nice to see more Quar; they look very characterful, and I especially like the partisans.

I've always liked the figs, but I've never had either a strong enough reason to buy some or the chance to play an intro game. In the end, I know my poor weeping wallet thanks me for the brief respite my stoic resistance in this provides it with!

Is that trader a conversion or a standard figure BTW? I don't remember seeing that before.

Lovely units  :) I really want some of these guys as adversaries for my Grymn....

Not as much as I want more Delgon though.

Thanks guys for all the kind words!

The "trader" is actually a conversion I did. It's not terribly difficult, i only have minimal sculpting skills. Josh, the gent that runs zombiesmith, will gladly sell you whatever bits you may need. It's a great setting and I thoroughly enjoy playing around on it. And I've never played a single game, I just love the minis and the fluff.

One of the things I love about this hobby is the indecent niche businesses doing their own thing.

My three favourites are (in no particular order)

Hassle free grymn (with old crow vehicles)
Zombie smith quar
Twilight

The thing I hate is that using them all together is highly improbable.

Funny you should say that. I've been working on a setting that will let players use whatever they have floating around. "Not-quar" have been a staple in there for a while, and I just fluffed up reasons to incorporate "not-Twilight" stuff too. Grymn might be a harder sell, I'll have to peruse their range and see what I can do... ;)

I have to suspend my disbelief too far to have scifi pulse gun toting grymn fighting wwi quar vs medieval fubarnii....

Yeah, unfortunately, you're right... Kindred would work better. Never was much of a squats fan, myself.

Those are fantastic. I was hoping you'd share some of your quar here  :)
Love the little conversions, particularly the trader type character with his packbeast.

Thanks! My conversion skills are definitely lacking, but they get the point across and aren't terrible if you stand far enough away.
The 'trader' is actually Llewlys Gehn, a notorious gunrunner and all-around ne'er-do-well from the Aerlyc March in the northern Elghmore Valley, Creevin. The scallywag in the mask with the orange armband is his nephew, P'dryg Gehn. Bad news all around!

I'm so glad that I haven't found a UK based retailer selling Quar. Cause like GecKilian Im tempted - and I'm rather sure I couldn't resist the temptation buying some if there had been a retailer over here. Love Aaron Brown's sculpt very much and see lots of resemblance to Twilight in the Zombiesmidth Quar.

And what a fantastic job you have done on them, Maccioniath. Don't make it any easier (resisting ;)).

What a great job!!!

Im looking at the website and the models/ theme do interest me! except i have NO idea what I should be looking at or anything :O
Where is the rulebook? Does it contain all the factions? where is the best place for a newbie to start?

This isn't aimed at you megaton, but I confess to being bemused by this need so many gamers have to buy into the manufacturers fluff and rules and force lists.

It may be that I'm old - started gaming in the early 80's - but I think this hobby is all about imagination and doing what YOU want. Rather than following someone else's view... Sure if you're into tournament play... But I don't think either twilight or quar are like that.

Just my 2p.

Hmm for me I am big on a games style. As style might dictate how the game is going to play. I.e Malifaux slightly wacky or warmachine aggressive. I Love styles, the world that creators make can enthrall me and really sell me on their product.
Twilight is a prime example of this. The unique and interesting models and concept instantly sold me :D

I'm with Megatron on this. I like a range of minis that has a nice coherent background and feel to it. Sometime it is fun to take random figures and thread them into your own setting, but other times it is nice to buy into somebody else's creation.

If I had time to paint my quar (and some day I hope to...), I'd first think how they fit into josh's world and how I could use them to play one of his rulesets. There are two books so far, with one more coming soon. The first was This Quars War and was designed for relatively large conflicts. It's a lovely little rulebook. The second was Songs of our Ancestors which is more skirmish based, but I've not got a copy yet. The third updates both, I think, as well as adding more factions etc. I think there were just two factions before then. If yu go over to the zombie smith forum they are a friendly bunch and will tell you all about it.

It wont let me log on to that forum >:( The admin question (what colour is the sky?) I answer blue but it still wont accept it (unless im doing something wrong)  I would be interested in getting Songs of our ancestors though as I like to collect rulebooks :)

Odd thing that, about the forum. I'll ask Josh to check it out. You don't necessarily need This Quars War if youre going to be playing smaller skirmish games, but it is a nice book with lots of art and background; Songs of our Ancestors (and the new book, Of Spats and Pedrails) continues the history of Alykinder's Crusade to end the Long War, but also has all the rules you need for said smaller games. If I had to sum up the quar in a single word, it would have to be "tired". They've been fighting each other for centuries and it has really worn them out, but they keep at it out of stubborn pride and their insatiable need to honor their fallen kin. I find it's a great setting.

Megatron0 - Does the security question give you an error? I just did a quick test and it let me create a new user.

If it doesn't give an error, and just refuses to work, I can create a username for you the same as yours here with a generic password that you can then change. Let me know!

thanks HZ! I don't have access to a computer ATM (on phone) it simply tells me that my answer is incorrect...so not sure but will check tomorrow :).
Will definitely be picking up the books. And some crusaders! I'm loyal to alykinder :-D (I hope they're his troops)can't wait to get paid!

The Crusaders are indeed Alykinder's troops. There are also 12ish different partisan/militia models (my personal favorites) and a bunch of royalists too. They're all fun models to paint, very similar to the Twilight stuff in that regard.

I thought I had commented here before. I love the Quar design, though I don't own any yet, and these ones look great! Really nice paint.

These guys are still a work in progress. Need highlighting, smoothing and proper bases. But I wanted to share them anyways, they're part of the new stuff Josh is releasing over the next few months. Don't worry, I've got a mess of Twilight stuff coming too, just need to finish them up....

I've been working on these quirky models lately. They're hefty Bob Olley sculpts called Occulites, for a company called Darwin Games. There's supposed to be a board game incorporating the minis coming out at some point. There's another post about them somewhere on the board. I just like the really unique look they have. I've gotten away from "army-building" per se and mostly just paint what I like the look of. And Dhogu. Lots and lots of Dhogu. Might even have pics of them one day! ;)

You've done them with big bases - is that what they come with?

Looking forward to seeing the dhogu!

Title: Re: My Quar and Other Assorted Stuff
Post by: maccioniath on May 11, 2012, 01:59:31 pm
Actually they come with little tiny integrated bases similar to the Quar. I've glued them onto great big honking washers (my first attempts at using something other than plastic bases... still figuring out what I'm doing in that regard) because some of the big guys have a pretty wide footprint and wouldnt fit on anything but GW monster bases. These washers are a bit smaller (not to mention cheaper, and readily available, thanks to GW's asinine marketing policies of late) but also give me plenty of room to play with, or will, once the minis are painted. Since I really have no intention of gaming with them, base size won't matter so much.

The paint jobs are really nice but the models are not to my taste. I wonder what the game will be like
