Title: Can fubarnii climb ladders?
Post by: Brandlin on May 23, 2010, 07:53:18 pm
well?

their hooves looks to clunky, and I was thinking about a ladder as a building element.

If not, then what do they use?

I'm not sure on that one. I think they probably can, but they would possibly need a slightly more solid step. Feel free to make an arbitrary decision or come up with some different ideas  :)

Is that a good or a bad thing?
Fubarnii do need to be able to climb up through roof hatches in spite of big bellies and sticking out tails, so the ability to climb ladders may actually be a requirement...

The hooves are big but the way the legs are jointed they should have no trouble climbing ladders. I think vertical would be awkward but not impossible. Would need to be fairly wide though to fit their gait and hoof width.

Thought: why ladders?  Unless they have to be portable, there are other solutions, such as setting rings or ledges into a wall, sort of like a simple climbing wall.  Or for suspending away from a wall, something like a rope net.  Ladders are basically vertical stairs, and use leg power with hands to balance.  It may be that the Fubarnii are happier using more arm strength.
Having said that, they would need a way of transporting objects if they couldn't carry them in their hands.  Also bear in mind crippled Fubarnii are not unknown and some buildings may need to have means of 'disabled access'.

Yes, they can climb ladders, although not as well as humans. They prefer them to be wider and not as steep (they're more hunched than humans, and would find climbing vertically very scary). But they don't need the rungs to be as "deep" as the pad on their foot - they're quite capable of supporting themselves on only a small fraction of their foot-area.

If they wanted to go vertically, or needed disabled access, they'd probably build (or have built for them) a lift. Just something simple, like a section of floor with ropes and counterweights. We know they don't have great respect for health-and-safety!

Have to disagree on vertical ladders. Going from the anatomy of the Fubarnii sketch Mike sent me I see no problems climbing vertical ladders. They would however be rarely used, only acess hatches etc, and even then only when theres no other option. Just like us really.

I only said "prefer" ;)

Besides, look at the size of their asses - they'd feel like they were going to fall over backwards if they were climbing vertically.

But would ladders not make it look a bit too 'human'?

I like the sound of a simple box with rope lift arrangement...

problem with lifts is that they need powering somehow... whereas ladders are mechanically passive. SO i can see lifts in use in say hay barns or big important buildings but not in local homes.

although a simple high gain block and tackle arrangement would make it possible for a fubarnii to lift himself... though he'd need a lot of rope and it'd take a while.

So the final conclusion is yes, they can climb ladders, and they do use them.  ;D
For vertical hatches I expect they sometimes just have short vertical tunnels they can shimmy up - I still have an image of some of the buildings having tunnels winding through the structures, rather than being a normal building interior, but I may just be being silly  ::)

Expand please........you mean like hamster cages but more "cave like" ?

I originally imagined the houses to basically provide a structure for a warren type cave system, but that doesn't really fit the neatly structured externals. Maybe I'll keep that idea for some of the casani buildings.

The Fubarnii aren't natural burrowers, at least by physiology. They wear clothes. I couldn't think of a way of having vertical shimmy-tubes that wasn't excessively complex. Personally I think ladders or some sort of simple mechanism is more likely. After all, ladders are leg-powered, and they work pretty well.

"warren type cave system"

Thats what I imagined when I saw the Tunisia/Tatooine pics. The excavated material used for the above ground building and the underground cave/tunnel style continued above ground. Are termite mounds like that ?

Yes, but bear in mind the Fubarnii are civilised - their underground "tunnels" are not a mole-hole, they're more like a hobbit-hole!
