Title: Contemplating a Twilight Tournament...
Post by: Carcharoth on May 24, 2011, 05:40:04 pm
There have been a few comments about having a twilight meet-up, so I thought I'd start a thread to see how practical it might be!

I would love to run a little tournament (or similar) where we can gather a few people together and have a bunch of games. I wouldn't want an overly-competitive style of tournament and it would need to have some aspect of scenario type games, but it is nice to have at least some sense of competition  :)
There would probably have to be a small charge to cover costs, but I'd be running it as a fun event rather than trying to make money. If I ended up more than covering costs then that would fund a few random prizes for the day. I think £20 a head would be a reasonable guess, but I'll have to see how much a venue would be etc to see if that is too high or too low...

I'm going to have a look for locations around where I live (in Farnborough), but the Aldershot Games Shop looks to have good potential.

It would be useful to know who would be interested and what sort of thing you would like to do. I think I would aim to have at least 8 players, but I expect a few of my friends from around here would take some of those slots.

So, what do you all think?

count me in deffo! And maybe a friend but not sure... Maybe the whole tournie can have a narrative theme :-D.

I'd be a definite, but with limited models and I reckon I could get a few more from guildford interested if it were demos, but they dont have forces yet so give us a little time!  ;D

I'm on that. I also like the idea of a narrative theme for the tourney. Perhaps each player could represent a faction in a region (ie. clan X, tribe Y, Delgon force Z), and at each table there are different scenarios, representing their interactions (escorting a trader caravan, leading punitive raids, etc). Winning the scenarios by a greater or smaller degree would give you more or less points, and and by the end of the day, your tally of points would represent your faction's dominance and success in the region. three or four tables for 8 or so players, with three or four games each. Cycle tables each round for variety. Pretty similar to simply getting VPs and tallying them at the end, but with added narrative.

Alternatively, we could do something similar, but each player contributes to a pool shared by players of the same army, ie. all delgon players contribute VPs to the same pool, all Devanu to the same pool, etc. At the end of the day the Delgon win, or the Empire win overall, more like a campaign day. It would still be possible to see who had the most wins etc. too. The (small) downside is that we might not have enough players for each faction, but it should be easy to confirm who's taking what before hand.

I guess I'm thinking of some kind of swiss-system, as is customarily done with miniature games tournaments.

And I hope I'm not being presumptious, but some people might have multiple factions which they might not mind loaning out to responsible individuals on the day :)

Chester is a nice place for a venue ...

Might have to paint something though

As long as you have a date arranged far in advance, count me in! I could easily bring my stuff should someone need to borrow a few things.

in regards to my narrative tournie theme maybe we could email you our lists prior and a theme could be sorted out? Or post them up here et I do like the clan idea as mentioned above...ENIPEL woooo!
Also second on the notice. Though I can't imagine it being a problem

Sounds like there is enough interest there - if I can get a good date. :)
I'll probably give 2 or 3 months notice so that people are more likely to be free, and have time to paint forces.

I'm going to have to think very carefully what to do with the games! It would be great to have a narrative thread through the day, even if it is very loose. Once people register I'll certainly ask what culture they would like to play, which will allow me to plan around that.

It would be fun to play the three cultures as teams - letting each side choose which player will take which scenario during each round. That sort of set-up might even allow odd numbers of players etc, but we shall see.

Another option would be a simple swiss tournament, with a variety of different scenarios depending on what cultures face each other. One issue might be that in an empire vs empire game neither side should really field knights... I've got some ideas on that though.

Feel free to suggest ideas/express preferences, but I'm going to keep things flexible until I've got a venue and players sorted :-)

Oh, and there will certainly be a best painted army prize, and everybody who uses their own fully painted army will be entered into a prize draw as well...

I might try and do a smaller, more casual event a bit sooner to scope out the venue (assuming I go for aldershot) and give a few demo games.

What size forces would you consider?

I'd play Devanu.

I will play Empire. Though I would play Devanu if there are to many Empire players. ( I only have One kopa and three grishaks)

My initial thought had been for forces of something like 300pts or 400pts. I think 400pts would open up a few options without being too excessive. Do you think that would be a manageable size?

Sounds good. I was worried about needing more minis  ;)

I personally vote for around 1,000 points. Easily doable I reckon.

Just sorta checked what I would need for 1000 points...that would be to much for me :/
500pts would be more newbie friendly :3

Smaller forces also means we'll get more games in.
However, that doesn't stop us combining forces together for a large final game if we felt so inclined...

I like. I've been thinking of some large game and multiplayer varient rules, but maybe anothe time.

lucky for you on that island having so many players concentrated in a fairly small area.. well, hopefully North America will gain player population too!

I dropped by the aldershot games club yesterday and was very impressed by the facilities - looks like we have a location. Now I just need to sort out a date and a plan...

I also had a nice little 400pt game with TuffSkull (when he wasn't being a giant and stomping on skaven or headbutting city walls). NuraSen Gohral narrowly avoided getting stomped on by a bunch of knights and fled into the wilderness with his one remaining bodyguard...

I think at that size there are plenty of options for each of the three cultures, while keeping games reasonably quick (90 minutes should be plenty of time for each round).
I do like the idea of a big finale though - two or three players on each side with a couple of extra commanders to tie everything together. The practicality of that will depend a lot how many people there are, and what the forces look like. I am very excited at the prospect now!

Not tournament related, but thanks for the game Mike!

Was great to see how the delgon work onthe table, and of course also to see all the beautiful armies you bought with you - Kudos to all the paint slappers & putty pushers involved.

Only sorry that I was being pulled away from our game to provide random giant-based-bloodshed in the warhammer siege  far more often than I expected to be - Next time I'll make sure i can focus on the better game  ;)

I wish I could take some credit for any of those painted models, but I can at least take credit for most of the sculpts  :)

I've used the delgon quite a bit recently, and that force seems to function quite nicely (NuraSen Gohral, 3 bodyguards, 2 NuraLehn Acolytes, 5 soldiers, 4 KalJoran, 2 Deraks and 2 Striders). I'm looking forward to our next game.

I'm planning to try and arrange a tournament some time in october, or possibly early november. It'll be aldershot and I'll do some proper advertising once I've secured a date. Who might be interested?

Good to have some interest so far! It'll be 400pt forces using anything from the two rulebooks or twilight travellers. Probably best to avoid using arak katain, danomar or roban as I may well have plans for them...
What cultures are you interested in playing as? I'm going to plan a narrative campaign for the day, with three games then a final big battle for the two winning cultures (details to be confirmed nearer the time).

400 points eh? So, 8 Striders or 16 Grishak. Hmm, choices choices...

;)

I'd definately be interested in early November  :) Assuming I'm not on call anyway, which I'm afraid I wont know for a bit... 400pts sounds perfect to me. I'd be most keen to bring Delgon, but could play either of the others if required.
@Mike - You're Delgon list sounds pretty close to mine (except for normal priest and I still need another Strider and a couple more KalJoran) I've had good success with them so far, but I think i still have the nuances of Delgon command and movement to figure out....

Please take a lot of pictures, someone to write down force lists, match ups, etc....  Would be nice to follow what happened from the other side of the Atlantic.

Its one of the things my business will offer. Fully filmed and edited tournament reports :)

NuraLehn Acolytes: Younger Acolytes who lead troops.   Pg11 of Book 2

Video would be excellent, even if I guess that means I would end up in front of the camera at some point...

For the Delgon I wanted some suitable names for the units that fit in with the force, rather than just using the descriptive english words. I'm including a translation table in the new Twilight Traveller, but until then:

DELGON FORCES
PRIESTHOOD
NuraGan - High Priests (no models yet)
NuraSen - Priests (the standard priest [40pts] or NuraSen Gohral [60pts])
NuraKira - Senior Acolyte (acolyte [15pts])
NuraLehn - Junior Acolyte (acolyte [15pts])
Note: the only real difference between NuraKira and NuraLehn would be decoration of the robes so you can easily switch between the two types of acolytes using the same model. I will do a new acolyte sculpt at some point, but it's fairly far down the list...
MILITARY
KalGarkii - Soldiers (Glaives [10pts])
KalDru - Deraks [20pts]
KalMalog - Striders [50pts]
KalJoran - Shocktroopers [15pts]
KalDreman - Bodyguards [20pts]
KalGush - Gushraks [TBD, ~30pts]

I Know I havent been around much lately, but if I'm free I'm certainly in!

End of October and November are pretty booked up on my calendar right now, but mostly evening events so I will at least be able to pop down for a good portion of it hopefully.

Guess I need to get painting!  ;D

*edit* Oh, and I'll be fielding an Empire Force, but you probably knew that anyway Mike! :D

@TuffSkull - Do you think you might convince any of your regular opponents to come along?

Title: Re: Contemplating a Twilight Tournament...

I'm not sure on that one Mike. I've Not been down the club much lately & since They never got so far as getting forces themselves, we had been limited to playing with my own collection & my disappearing left them a void I'm afraid. I was down there last Monday and it appears in my absence they've skipped over WoT and moved on to infinity - Heretics!

I'll do my best to draw them back once I've got more pretties painted up though!  :-\

I might be able to bring a couple of guys ( they would be new) but I could lend the some models and it would make a good intro session for the  if anyone thinks that's a good idea?

I've been dragged (well, lightly shoved..) down the Infinity route, but in exchange, I'm working on a couple of the Guildford guys to jump on board with WoT.

Any more details on the date of the tournament so I have a fixed timescale to reel them in?? ;)

There's a couple of things delaying fixing a date, but I'm hopeful that I'll sort them out overthe next week or two. It'll be pushed back a little bit, but hopefully not too much. Sorry for the delay...

After a veeeery slow initial response from the venue, it looks like they are finally getting themselves organised to arrange a date ;D
I think I might do a small event later this year as a dry run for a larger tournament early next year. Fingers crossed it goes to plan...
More news as soon as it is available, but watch this space.
