I have been procrastinating in uploading my character. Mainly because the others have been so well fleshed out by others who have a very sound knowledge of the lore and history of the world of Twilight. I thought this character up quite some time ago when I first asked about having nomadic clans. Please forgive any lore oversights as I am still getting to grips with all the bits and pieces of knowledge floating around. Any suggestions on how to increase its 'authenticity' would be greatly appreciated.

I was hoping to have a model made up as a WiP but my mail order shipment has run into setbacks (curse this living in a country so far from the UK Tongue ) but I hope to start work on the beast soon. The caravans and traders are my favourite twilight elements so far and the belan is just beautiful. I tip my hat to the miniatures designer there.

Right from a very young age, Jarla wanted to travel the world. When old enough, Jarla set out on a promising career as a trader. Even though the journeys were arduous, Jarla enjoyed the opportunities her line of work presented.

As an opinionated and progressive young trader, Jarla often attracted the odd joke and jibe. “This is how it is done Jarla, this is how it has always been done….you’ll learn” the older traders would say.

It wasn’t long before Jarla started to think of ways to improve the way traders did their business. It struck her that most of their time was spent travelling vast distances, often through difficult and perilous terrain.  She came across an idea that instead of traders travelling all the way from one town to the next across the Empire, wouldn’t it make more sense to have the trading meet half way.

Jarla convinced a small group of younger, more adventurous traders to venture to the far corners of the empire, and trade the goods they obtained to Jarla directly. In return, she would bring supplies to them and meet up with them in the wilderness. In this way they could have a quicker turn around on their goods.

The first meet was a success. At first she wasn’t sure how many traders would be at the rendezvous. Most of the traders met at the right time and location, bringing all sorts of goods for trade. They stayed for a week. It was a time of haggling, story telling and merriment.

That was many seasons ago and the meetings have gotten larger, grown in fame and have been occurring farther out. Since that time Jarla has grown in years and girth. Success in trading has meant that Jarla is somewhat larger than when she started out all those years ago. However to her credit, Jarla still makes the journey each season, although these days the caravan is very much larger than before and commands quite an escort. Many new traders try to sign up to trade with the great Jarla.

Due to her size, Jarla now travels on a great Belan. This beast has been with her for some time now and carries a howdah on which Jarla reclines herself to make the journeys easier.  Her belan is called Old Scar on account of the claw marks that run down the left side of its head. This leftover of a near death experience at the hands of a Devanu hunting pack, has left Old Scar exceptionally alert to danger. Old Scar has proven to have an uncanny ability to sense Devanu before the guards have even been aware of their presence.

I got the idea from my readings into the beaver fur trade with the mountain men trappers of the US and Canada. There was a trading company that started organising trappers who would be supplied and sent out into the wilderness. Each year they would hold a gathering, a 'rendezvous'. This was set up by a man of vision who saw the benefit of organised exploitation of the fur trade.

I have included a very rough sketch that I did while supervising a class sitting their exams. It was mainly to illustrate the awnings rather than the cushions and recliner etc. I have yet to think up some stats but I wanted Old Scar to be more than just an average Belan.

Hope this is good enough to be here with such great examples of very colourful characters Smiley

A good entry - the sketches certainly help to bring her to life  Smiley
