I've just announced a Scenario Design Contest in the latest
Kickstarter update!
The Chronicles of Anyaral compilation book is coming along nicely, but there’s still work to do on it and I thought it might be fun to give you all an opportunity to make your mark on it with a little contest!
The Chronicles of Anyaral will have lots of scenarios, some drawn from previous books, others brand new and it would be fun to see if any of you can come up with some good ideas. If you would like to enter the contest then all you need to do is to come up with a new scenario!
General guidance for scenario design - Tell a story – write a short piece of prose to introduce the scenario, or at least a little bit of background. This is what adds flavour to a scenario and is the main thing I’ll be judging the contest on.
- Choose a setting - where is this scenario taking place? In the centre of the Empire, the frozen North, the inhospitable Argoran wastes or somewhere else entirely? How does this impact the forces and the scenery?
- Try to keep things relatively simple – don’t add in too many scenario specific rules! A few are of course okay, but try not to get carried away. Have a look at the scenarios in the first two books or the Travellers for examples.
- Victory Conditions – How do you win? The important thing here is to have a clear way of deciding this. You can just use the standard ‘kill more than half your opponent’s elites’ as a starting point for either or both sides.
- Keep it reasonably small – I’ve put a limit of 500pts per side. Some of the best scenarios only use a handful of figures. Force composition – if you can use models from the starter and expansion forces then that will make it much easier for people to play the scenario!
- How many players? – Two player is the normal number for a wargame, but feel free to make a scenario for any number of players between one and four (Or even more if you’ve got a REALLY good idea).
- Ask for help – if you’ve got a good idea then share it and get feedback. This is by far the best way to refine an idea. I’ll be watching the forum and I’m always happy to give my thoughts.
How the contest works… This is being done as a fun little contest for anybody who would like to get involved! It’s going to be very short (my self-imposed deadlines are looming), so you have until the end of June to enter. You can either enter by emailing me or posting on the World of Twilight forum (message me here if you want to join!). I will pick a winner from all the entries I receive and if any of the ideas inspire me then I will try to find a way to include them in the book.
The winner will get a small prize and if I use your idea in any form then you will of course get a special mention in the book. I’ve not fully planned the prize yet, but if you aren’t getting a copy of the book already then I will send you one of those, otherwise I’ll throw in a little extra that I think will go well with your pledge.
Now, on with the thinking caps!
