A while ago I had a number of very interesting conversations with Warren, Beth and Tom about various creatures that live on Anyaral. I doodled a bunch of creatures and Warren did some lovely little sketches. I then compiled all those together to give a sense of scale. This image only shows the profile images, thus doesn't tell you everything about the different creatures. Feel free to ask questions about any of the critters!

Photobucket seems to be playing up, so not sure if the image is going to work at all. If not I'll come back in a bit and see if it has cleared up at all!

Wow. Beautiful.

Top right; is that a devanu jenta?

The middle row right beast also stands out for me.

You have a really cohesive style going on.

It'd be nice to see which ones are used by the Fubarnii, which commonly interact with each other, etc.

I can see the enuks, but I wonder whether the Fubarnii would ride on something so as large as the bottom row second from left.

I really like the Larger barak styled beasts as well.

Did you recently sculpt the middle row furthest left?

Are any of the other creatures drawn here sentient?

Wow. Beautiful.
Thank you  Smiley

Nope, it's a more primitive species that I think lives in some of the forests. It is similar in relation to the devanu as a chimp would be to us.

That would be a grimblar - a big nasty that rarely ventures out from the forests. I've got an old sculpt of him, but some day I'll rework him (probably in a couple of years as I've got a plan that would involve him).

Thanks, I've tried very hard to maintain that. Warren (Vermis) designed a bunch of the creatures which I then messed around with until they felt right.

That is something I will have to have a go at! Most of the creatures have a fair bit of back story to them, but it might take some remembering! These are also a random cross section of beasts from across Anyaral, so many would never interact at all, unless in a Fubarnii zoo... The other thing to note is that this is far from comprehensive! I've not included any flying beasts, or even the scavenger that Mark sculpted.

Fubarnii of the Empire wouldn't tend to ride those, but they are a favoured mount of the Ferals. The beast in the middle of the bottom row is occasionally used as a mount by some of the clans along the western coast of Anyaral.

I think you are referring to the Belan. One of the first scenarios I wrote involved a trader with his big Belan packbeast trying to get home (I've still got the original model). It was a bit impractical to recreate him in metal, but one of my plans for this year is to do a resin belan packbeast.

Yup, that would be the Yirnak. I'm currently working on a rider for it.

Nope, Fubarnii scholars are only aware of three sentient species - the Fubarnii, the Devanu and the Enarii/Belog.

Which does not preclude the fact that they have miscounted Smiley

I like the absurdity (to human eyes) of the second to bottome row second to last on the right.  Is that a legged walrus?

This lot are clearly in the "terrestrial herbivores and carnivores" niche; do we assume that there's a similar diversity of water-based and flying beasties, and for that matter are all the above in the same glass? Are there as many differnt phyla, etc, on Anyaral as Earth?

They are beutiful drawings, anyhow. Wonderbubbleful!

Some very cool beasts in here - and hopefully some of them will come alive (model vice - I mean)

I'm really keen on feral fubarnii.

Quote
In the vast forests of Anyaral, another force is stirring. The Delgon work-teams move deeper among the trees, felling them in huge numbers to fuel their campaign. But in doing so they have awoken the forest's denizens; recently many teams have been lost, and those who survived spoke of vast swarms of Frenu and monstrous beasts that tore through their machinery and slaughtered the workers.

I can't wait for extrapolation on that. There's also a fair bit on the old website, isn't there?

I think I've seen photos of the belin.

Would any of the beasts have howdaws/platforms/palenquins mounted on them?

@Brandlin - the big creature fills a similar niche to the hippo. But yes, it certainly has similarities to a two-legged waltrus.
@Jubal - there are a few different phyla on Anyaral. I've focussed on a reasonably small subset, but tried to create a few more distinct variants. I've not included any Garkrida (similar to insects) in that image. I've certainly not started exploring the depths of the oceans (or even the rivers) much either. The old website had a rough classification tree, and Warren sketched out a slightly different version at some point.
@clam - TheGremlin has already partially answered your question. Don't take anything you've read on the frenu as fact though - very little is known about them. All going well I would eventually like to give them some attention. I want to try and be restrained and flesh out the existing cultures first though rather than dabble in too many different areas!
As for sculpting beasts... I certainly plan to sculpt a few more, and hopefully Mark will have a go at expanding the menagerie as well.
@TheGremlin - The feral fubarnii will make an appearance reasonably soon, hopefully on a small scale some time this year. I've been itching to sculpt some of their beasts!
I have nothing against howdahs etc, and I'm sure there are times when the Fubarnii would make use of them. I've not managed to get one looking right yet (I've had the same problem with chariots), but I'm sure inspiration will strike eventually!

Its a wide coherent variety there. Few stand out from the rest.

Ive been thinking about insectoid creatures while musing about Fubarnii foods. Mike hinted that while Fubarnii arnt vegetarian they prefer fungi over other stuff. I can see them having a regular diet of fungi and greens complemented with occasional insects. Fish and meat would be luxuries.

Fish are quite abundant but there is a slight problem with the "creatures that lurk in the depths" !!!

Is that a good or a bad thing? I do want to add a few more creatures that break the rules a bit and expand into other phyla - creatures on earth are all so varied and I want to try and capture that while maintaining a nice coherent underlying feel. I need to work through various biomes and fill the different niches, but that in itself would be a big enough project to keep me busy for years to come, so I'm just dipping into it occasionally.

Poor choice of words. I kinda mean some grab my attention more than others.

Yeah, that's pretty much right. They enjoy garkrid a lot (a term about as specific as "bug" on Earth). Meat is considered a luxury, but not one many Fubarnii long for; it's more like caviar or lark's tongues - not actually very nice. It's also considered a little bit uncivilized. The only regular consumers of meat in quantity are army footsloggers - because it can be dried and preserved, and is very energy-dense, it is used as "marching rations". It plays hell with their digestion, and gives them a faint but unmistakable smell. Because of this, they are often quite ill-tempered.

Fish are quite abundant but there is a slight problem with the "creatures that lurk in the depths" !!!
And the fact that most Fubarnii aren't good in the water. They're bad swimmers, and drowning has very bad religious connotations for (most of) them.

Which one is the Belan, 3rd or 4th row? I'm guessing 4th row, second from left. What is in the 3rd row second from left, a distant cousin with vestigial arms?
