Title: Replacing spear poles???
Post by: HannahFKW on April 20, 2011, 07:39:19 pm
Has anybody replaced the spear poles for the fubarnii at all??? Is it easy to do?
I've heard there are some thicker ones that you can buy for them, not sure, I might have made that up :P

Are the spears bending that much?

Generally, there are two ways to replace the spears:

Method #1
1) Measure length of the spear shaft, and add a few millimetres to that size to allow it to go into the head and the end cap of the spear.
2) Find some brass rod of a similar diameter, and cut a suitable length.
3) Clip off the shaft sections of the spear, and drill holes through the hands and into the head and the end cap.
4) Push the brass rod through the hands, and then glue the two ends up.
5) Offer up the hands to the model and carefully run a little bit of very thin superglue into the hand/spearshaft joint.
6) Let it set, and then you're done.

Method #2
1) Same as Method #1 (1)
2) Using some thin steel or piano wire instead of brass rod, Same as Method #1 (2)
3) Measure the sections of spearshaft between the hands, end and head.
4) Cut some suitably-sized brass tube that will fit over the wire to suit the dimensions in (3) above.
5) Same as Method #1 (3)
6) Push the thin wire through one hand and glue. Now slide on two corresponding sections of brass rod over the the wire, then the other hand, the last section of tube and the head or end cap (depending on which hand you started with!
7) Same as Method #1 (5-6)

This is fiddly work as you can imagine! Method #1 is the simpler of the two, but drilling bigger holes in the hand can weaken them a bit. Method #2 is more involved, but is better if the hands are small, or if you are going to also pin the hands to the arms.

A better visual guide to the second of these two methods can be found here (http://theworkshop.la/old_blog/?action=painting&faction=modeling&model=ifp_brass_rods).

If you need to know where you can get brass rod or different viscosities of superglue, etc, just shout.

How many knights have you got? I'll pop replacement spears for all of them in with your belan if you would like. The new spears look a little more rustic, but the reduction in bendiness is worth it. Eventually I'll do the thicker spears as standard.
I haven't changed the militia spears, but they are much less of a problem.

That would be awesome for some replacements, I have 3 knights.
But I'm also having a few problems with my fubarnii militia, they keep bending, any idea's with them???

Thanks for all the help guys, can't wait to get them all sprayed and painted!!!  ;D

[pedant=on]

A spear pole? Surely, young lady you mean shaft?

[pedant=off]

I have five knights with the old spears unmade and because I've unbagged them and left them in a box i now have knight arms carrying wilted spears, banana spears and one doing a passable impression of a reef knot.

I shall be replacing them all with brass rod. (eventually)

I'll also take the opportunity to make the spears longer more like a true lance so the spear head reaches past the enuk head. That will also give me the opportunity to put nice fluttery little banners on the spear shafts near the heads. My knights are going to be show offs...

I've never had too bad problems with the militia spears once they were assembled - the wider positioning of the hands is far better on them than on the knights. I will revisit them though in the same manner as the knights and do some heavier spears (and maybe some other alternate pole arms while I'm at it?). not very helpful in the short term though...
