The start (and the end?)

After picking up my starter and a few other figures at Salute 2012, I've decided that, due to procrastination and all manner of RL things that will be kept safely in RL, maybe a project log could help ensure I finish these beautiful figures, rather than them being added to my pile-o-unfinished-armies* that are massing in the attic.

My figures (and thus, to-do) pile is:

5 Grishnak
1 Devanu
4 Herders
2 Knights and Captain
5 Militia and Captain
1 Engineer
24 stones

Wow. Not too much eh?

As of the day of this post, I've managed to glue together three Grishnak, the Devanu, Engineer, a Herder, and two knights. Most of those need some green stuff application (especially the Grishnak and Devanu) before being undercoated.

I've also found some resin based I picked up for my Malifaux Gremlins, which are swamp/wood/something style, and have painted up one as a test, and started on another.

Lastly, I've painted the insert of the stones (using foundations then main colours), then dropped in some gloss varnish. Hopefully they will hold up!

So, I start as I (hopefully) mean to go on. While I wait to get some liquid green stuff, I'll work on the other bases and get the rest of the stones finished off. What colour should I do the rims on the Fubarnii bases? I was thinking that purple the half-finished base is on... but not sure.

*Pile consists of: Bushido starter, 4 Malifaux starters, 40k Eldar, IG, SM and Chaos, WFB Skaven, Necromunda Gang, Uncharted Seas Human/Dwarf fleets, Warmachine Magnus starer, Hordes 35pts of Blindwater

Have you seen the 'tale of artists in anyaral' thread? By my count you've got two 300pt forces ready to go there... Do you think you can get then finished in 3 months?

I keep forgetting to paint my stones...though it might be better to finish painting enough minis to play with first, lol.

A good start sir, looking forward to seeing them develop.

The purple base rims would certainly stand out. I use GWs Calthan Brown so it fits in with my terrain.

I'm an advocate of black base rims for pretty much everything, but purple would certainly make them stand out. Nice bases, and I second Mike's recommendation to join the Tale of Anyaral Painters thread - points mean prizes!

Went to Walsall on on Saturday, and managed to pick up some bits, including the fabled liquid green stuff, and a few other GW paints. I'm not normally a fan of their paints, but now they've switched over to Vellajo's liquid pigments, it's not too bad.

First Grishak

I'm not too sure on the colours tbh. I like the green, very "lizard-y", but even after I went through the trouble of doing layers (actual layers! It was a first for me!), it still looks like a wash and a drybrush job. My partner mentioned that they might look a tad boring if they were all the same, so I might go with different colours, say a dark red for one, and a darker blue for another, or are grishak only found in one type/shade of colour?

Edit: Laura said that she said "green is boring", not that I needed different colours. (But I like the green!)

Edit 2: We just made some custard cream keyrings, which are in the oven to set. I am so tempted to have my predatory Grishak, roaming the dreaded Custard Cream Fields! (custard cream bases). Someone hold me back before I do it!

Good start. Nice looking bases!
The texture in the Grishak makes them easy to paint quickly, but hard to step up to the next level. I've seen some very nicely painted ones with nice crisp demarcation between a darker top and a lighter underbelly - ben's are an excellent example. Yours certainly looks like a good pj though, and I also like the green

It's Sick green (Vallejo), I then washed it with Devan mud which made it a bit too dirty. Went back over with Sick Green again, then layering with SG and white for a few layers, then a Thraka green wash, and back over with another layer. The under-neath is Scorpion green, again washed, but not done any layering with it. I'm not sure on it, to be honest. It's a bit... meh.

Try breaking up the colours on it. As mike suggested have a pale underbelly or do some stripes etc it actually looks pretty good though

Pale as in a cream colour or such, or as in a paler green?

You could try either cream or pale green (I think green would be better), or just go for a few dark stripes to break up the block of colour. Not that it looks bad as it is!

I think youve just done too many steps thats all. The green you have there could be achieved by a simple base coat of green and a black wash.

From that I would highlight with the green again and add more highlight adding yellow to the green. While adding white would give you a more natural pastely highlight I think yellow will give you a more colorfull overall look.
Add some pure white highlights to the boney bits too.

They are neatly done btw which is the main thing, you just need to experiment with what colour choices you like.

As an owner of 'several' all-green Grishak, I think they look great! As Klute suggested another layer of highlights on the bone would help them pop more. Patterning could indeed help differentiate them and either add more colour or some natural darker markings. There are a couple of good examples on the forum.

I'm back home tomorrow so i'll have a shot at accentuating the underbelly and work on the boney areas. I did like the tiger stripes might experiment on a leg so it is easier to clean up.

The green with yellow sounds useful i'll test it on a spare figure and maybe just redo this model.

Rather than make a new post, I'll just put up what I've done.

Looking at the base, I do wonder if black edges would work best. I mean, green on green and all that.

Jesus, I know skill gets better, but when you look at the first grishak and the second one, and want to stamp the first one into oblivion, something's up :/

That's my "leader" grishak. His one eye is white, from wound (the other is black), and he's stepping over a log.
