I'm liking those... they'd be huge in game terms, but as artwork, really nice. Smiley  We demand art-prints! lol!

I used to work for a naval architect so I shall try not to over think this.

I'm actually a little surprised they are so ... Conventional? I was expecting something a little whackier.

I've been thinking of making a boat kit. One of the things I dislike about boat models you buy is hat even the waterline ones done have the necessary double curvature in the hull. They are basically just vertical slab sided and curved to a point at the bow.
I could make a much more realistic boat shape by mimicking the plank build style in laser cut styrene, but I've been uncertain about the style to do that with so as to make a good impression with the technique.  Think it would work best by having large amoun og hull visible above the water line, so perhaps the quite upright style of the first picture? Is it supposed to be wood or iron or some form of fubarnii botany ear wax?

I like the tug. I love way the hull just seems to have stopped and a paddlewheel is rammed in there... The aesthetics of that really work for me.

The floating city is just silly... In a good way. You'll have a lot of stability issues as you have all your buoyancy arranged deep under the central point (like an inverted volcano) this will make it capsize almost instantaneously. You'd have to arrange the bulk of the buoyancy around the edges, like a circular life raft or a katamaran. Having said that the idea of making some form of waterline raft/buoyancy structure on which I could balance existing buildings could be visually very interesting!

The last one intrigues me most. I'm presuming the vane structures create rotational motion that drives the Sid paddle wheels rather than acting as aerosol sails?  I like the silly novelty of this in a way I can't quite put my finger on...

Thanks for the food for though mike.

I Love the tug too.  It would make a great styrene kit.

They look great! That said, I'd be surprised if the Fubarnii boats were all traditionally hulled like those ones (bar of course the city). I don't know the engineering side of this too well, but what about more of a development of a giant raft theme? Perhaps eventually shaped in a forward point with some sides as the weight of goods etc required it to sit lower in the water, but essentially flat-bottomed, possibly with a vertical bit going under the water for stability. So rather than a "U or V" shape, a "T" shape going down into the water.

Also, what about outlying regions? It seems that having mostly steam-powered boats would be mostly an option for wealthy guild members on trading voyages, Imperial missions, or the Central Empire - would the poorer areas be able to afford big steam-driven engines (or indeed have the expertise to build the clockwork of the windmillboat?)

I guess I'm partly thinking of this from the view of the great lakes/fenland region around Larigal, for which rafts and punts seem an obvious starting point as the waters may be quite shallow...

Just a few thoughts - they do look very nice though, and the millboat looks particularly cool.

Another quick sketch...
This time a rough concept sketch of his grace, Arudor, the 12th Emperor of the mighty Fubarnii Emperor. It's a very rough first attempt, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts...

Looks very cool and very pompus. The only thing I'd say is that I'd imagine he'd be higher than everyone else, perhaps on some sort of dias.

The two fubarnii are advisors from the Emperor's council. Very powerful individuals in their own right.
Good point on the elevated dias. I had imagined him at the topic stairs with his councillors around him, but further elevation would be in keeping.

Constantine VII was recorded as having a self-elevating throne which could be down at dais level or elevated even higher to allow him to overlook and speak to his entire great hall. I'm thinking this would quite appeal to the Fubarnii?

I've not managed any new sketches yet this week, so I've raided my old sketchbooks...
These are all very rough and highly inaccurate. Assume they are torn from the pages of a particularly crazy old engineer's sketchbook...

First up, some earlier, crazier sketches of boats:

I'm quite pleased with the big 'fish' though  Smiley

Next, some Delgon artwork:

Top right is an early attempt at an Icon for the Empire, but originally scrapped in favour of the final one.

Finally, some Empire iconography. Glyphs of this sort occasionally adorn buildings in the vague hope that the Enarii will look down, see them and somehow look after the occupants. It's not generally done in a terribly devout way, but more in a pragmatic 'can't hurt' type of way.

Over to you guys... what do you think?
